Wharton EMBA: Not Offered an Interview? Next Steps This year marks the first year that Wharton has implemented an invitation-only interview admissions process. This means that some candidates may not have received an offer for an interview recently when Wharton informed invited candidates that they had been granted an EMBA interview. If you were not offered an interview, you are probably very disheartened and not certain about what next steps to take.
Your first step should be to assess why you did not land an interview. Was your EA score too low? Is your undergraduate GPA too low and not offset by subsequent coursework? Is your work experience inadequate in its length, breadth, or depth? Did one of your recommendations fail to present a strong case for your admission or include damaging information?
It is important to assess the weaknesses in your application accurately so you can identify the best next steps. For some candidates, securing a “ding analysis” from a reputable MBA admissions consulting company can be very useful for pinpointing weaknesses in the application or candidacy. You want to identify the problem so you can correct it before applying to other EMBA programs or submitting a reapplication to Wharton.
The good news is that many weaknesses that cause rejections can be corrected. If, for instance, your essays were not compelling, you can work to put forward much more honed and compelling essays.
At MBAAdmit.com, 100% of our Wharton applicants received interviews in both Round 1 and Round 2, and this is not because all our candidates are perfect, but because they presented applications that were so compelling that the Admissions Committee wanted to hear more. They addressed any notable weaknesses, like
a less-than-ideal EA score or GPA, effectively so that those weaknesses did not stand in the way.
Once you identify the area of concern and determine if it is fixable in the near term, you can decide if it is worth waiting until next year or beyond to reapply to Wharton, or if you should target another top-tier EMBA program.
Some candidates decide their main weak spot is not fixable quickly and don’t want to defer their EMBA education. They try to address readily fixable problems, like preparing better essays, and go on to gain admission to other top EMBA programs within months. So, keep your spirits up! Future success at a top EMBA program – Wharton or others – may still be possible.
