Don’t PANIC, do this
Some candidates have excelled in their professional careers but recognize they have a weakness that might stand in the way of admission to the Wharton EMBA program (often, a low EA score, concerning career trajectory, or low GPA). After seeing the new Wharton EMBA application, candidates with weaknesses to overcome have begun to panic. “Should I give up? How can I override a notable weakness with next-to-no essay content to state my case?”
Don’t give up. Use the application strategically! If you approach the Wharton EMBA application holistically, you can get important credentials, stories, and achievements into your application through the available channels, presenting a compelling case that allows you to override a weakness.
While, of course, your choice of essay topic is exceedingly important, you should also consider these seven ways to ensure you impress the admissions committee:
Ensure your recommendation maximizes your odds of successBecause you have limited essay space in this year’s Wharton EMBA application, your recommendation is very important. At
MBA Admit.com, we don’t leave recommendations to chance. We usually work with recommendation writers, helping them understand what topics and text can help propel a candidate to admission, and coaching them appropriately so that the recommendations truly shine. The recommendation should showcase the depth, breadth, excellence, and distinctiveness of your skills and experience. At
MBA Admit.com, we help ensure the writer weaves important professional stories (and, when appropriate, personal stories and references to extracurricular activities) into the recommendations, since it is hard this year to get that information into the online application otherwise. A carefully crafted recommendation provides an application with impressive depth. The recommendation form allows for 1750 words of content. That is a lot! So, make sure the recommendations are used excellently.
Secure a second recommendationWharton usually accepts a second recommendation if a candidate asks another writer to send one. There are three types of candidates, in particular, who should consider sending in a second recommendation: candidates with a notable weakness to overcome, candidates from overrepresented profiles (Indian foreign nationals, East Asian foreign nationals, engineers, bankers, etc.), and nontraditional profiles who need to elevate the business-relevancy of their experience. In these cases, it is very advisable to pursue a second recommendation, so that you have a second voice advocating vigorously for your admission.
Hone your resume with critical, impressive informationYour resume provides a crucial snapshot of your candidacy and strengths in three key areas – professional, academic, and extracurricular. At MBAAdmit.com, we encourage Wharton EMBA applicants to present two-page resumes, because you can use the extra page to go in depth in these key areas, presenting additional information about your impressive professional roles and responsibilities, extracurricular leadership, and awards. Remember, this is an application resume, not a job resume (job resumes are usually restricted to one page). Taking advantage of a second page is important because you have so little essay space this year to make your case for admission. Ensure your resume is honed and compelling.
Present compelling career goalsWhen you present a compelling vision for your short-term and long-term career goals, Wharton takes note! Make sure to present impressive goals that will convince the admissions committee you will be a great influence in your field in the future. You may need to convey some of this information through your recommendation letter.
Use the optional essay wellIn the online application, Wharton asks, “
Do you feel your college grades reflect your academic abilities? If no, please explain.” Importantly, this section does not appear to have a word limit! Therefore, if you need 500 words to state your case, you can provide an explanation for why your grades were less than ideal. You can also include information that shows the admissions committee that you have gained excellent skills and demonstrated strong academic, analytical, quantitative, and integrative reasoning skills since college. For those whose college grades were not ideal, it is very important that you take great advantage of this section.
Use the online job descriptions excellentlyWharton asks that you provide up to 100 words to describe each job you have held. This is less space than you might have on your resume to explain what you did in that job, so you should work with the best material from your resume, shining a light on the very best credentials you highlight there. Focus on the most impressive, high-impact responsibilities and skills. Also show a breadth and depth of skills—from hard skills to people skills.
Use your LinkedIn profile wellWharton asks for your LinkedIn address. Be certain to review the information you present there, so that it is working in your favor.
