Wharton EMBA R1 Deadline: 3 Months Away! Timeline for Preparing

The first deadline (of two) for Wharton's 2019-2020 admissions cycle is on December 4, 2019, which is currently only three months away! Time is passing very quickly, it seems. Where should you be in your preparations? What should you be doing in the time you have left between now and the Wharton EMBA deadline?

With three months to go, you should have already begun to take steps to revise your resume so that you can reach out to Wharton, securing their high-level feedback about the strength of your candidacy. Please note, though, that you should not send your resume in until you are certain it presents you in the best light possible as a candidate for a top EMBA program. An application resume differs somewhat from a job resume, and you want to put your best face forward. You don’t want to make a poor first impression and then find yourself in a situation in which you are striving to “un-do” that impression over the next few months. So, revise your resume well!

You should also be studying for your Executive Assessment exam. Candidates who do well on the Executive Assessment exam spend about three to four weeks studying for it, on average. The amount of time you will need to prepare depends on your existing quantitative and English proficiency.

So, with three months to go, make sure these three steps are underway:

Revise Your Resume. Make sure to revise and strengthen your resume. Don’t just send any resume in to the Admissions Committee for feedback (through its website, Wharton offers to give you feedback about whether they think you will be a good Wharton EMBA candidate). Remember, if you send your resume in for feedback, you are making a first impression – and first impressions last! Revise your resume so that it is outstanding and presents you in the best light, demonstrating strengths in the ways Wharton most values, so you can get off to a great start.

Engage with the School. Your admissions journey should also include attending information sessions or webinars and reaching out to current students and alumni members. You should demonstrate interest in the program, beyond reading the website.

Prepare for your Executive Assessment (EA) Exam or GMAT/ GRE. Most candidates prefer to take the EA rather than the GMAT since it takes significantly less time to prepare for the EA. Wharton prefers to see a score of 158-160 or higher on the EA, with a quant score of at least 12. (They have set this EA bar much higher than two years ago, when they indicated a score of 150 was fine.) On the GMAT, a score of 680 or higher is usually fine. (A GMAT score between 630-660 can sometimes be sufficient, depending on the strength of the candidate's work history and academic achievements; but, in general, 680 or higher is much safer.)

With only three months before the Round 1 deadline, you must also prepare for your formal interview with Wharton. The school prefers that you interview before the deadline, so you should book an interview in October or November. But, remember, this is the only formal interview you will receive, so you want to prepare well. This means you should have your “positioning” down – what you intend to convey about what you bring to the table, your short-term goals, and your long-term goals. Ideally, you should write a draft of your essays before the interview, so that you have refined what you will say about these important matters. Therefore, if you have not yet begun to craft your essays, get started!

So, over the next month, make sure to begin taking these steps:

Draft Winning Essays. Allot plenty of time to brainstorm and compose outstanding essays. The essays represent your marketing package. Written to a high standard, the essays can help you stand out from the crowd or help you override a soft spot in your profile. So, use the essays excellently!

Prepare for Your Formal Interview and Class Visit. The admissions process includes a formal interview, and the interview is very important: candidates can get eliminated from consideration after the interview if things go poorly. You should review commonly asked EMBA interview questions and rehearse your responses.

Finally, recommendations usually weigh as heavily as the essays in admissions outcomes, and the Wharton Round 1 deadline occurs right after the Thanksgiving holiday. So, you should have your recommendation writers complete the recommendations well before the Thanksgiving holiday period (when they likely will be unavailable), to ensure the recommendations will be written with great care and delivered on time. Over the next month, you should make sure to identify your ideal writers and ensure they are prepared to draft the recommendations in a timely manner.

Reach Out to Recommendation Writers. Preparation for applying involves reaching out early to recommendation writers and ensuring they compose outstanding recommendations in time for the deadline. Take the time to consider who will be the best writers for you. Who can write a glowing recommendation that conveys deep details about your strengths as a businessperson and leader? Once you decide, you should reach out to the writers, secure their commitment to write for you, and guide them about what a great recommendation looks like.
