Hey guys,
Just returning from the Wharton information session. I believe its one of the first ones for fall 2008. The director of admissions Thomas <something> was there. Excellent salesman, outstanding presentation skills and good sense of humour. The alumni present there were great too, one of them actually got in with a gmat of 590 (although he was class of 94 ).
My observations and impressions:
- Wharton only likes to compare itself with Harvard and Stanford (a marketing trick highlighter earlier by pelihu)
- A total denial of any type of "quota" system even though no one actually asked the question (someone's defensive)
- An acknowledgment that they look carefully at GMAT breakdowns. If you had an undergrad say in Art History then they focus on your quant score and vice versa for technical majors
- The interest level is Sydney was somewhat low. There were only about 30 attendees. However I did see a large stash of unused name tags (presumably these were people who registered but didnt turn up).
- Too much mention of Mckinseys even though the event was held in the Bain office
Will I apply ? Based on just the presentation , probably not. Most of the "information" in the session can be garnered in the web site itself.
However after hearing the alumni speak, I will apply. The alumni were fun, down to earth and keeping it very real (maybe its an Australian thing), and seemed like people who would be heaps of fun.
