Unless you have made an unusual impact both on and off the job, Stanford would be a stretch for you. Your GMAT is below average as is your work experience. They might overlook the GMAT, since your grades are strong, if you have made an impressive difference in the organizations that you've been a part of.

You have a solid profile for Stanford (assuming you also have top grades), but the competition at Stanford is tough. Given your goals and qualifications, you should also apply to other top MBA programs. Consider Ross, Kellogg, Darden, Haas, Duke, and CBS.

Hey guys, would appreciate some advice on a potential application to the MBA program for 2021 entry.

GMAT: 710 (V40, Q47)

Background/Goals: I'm 32, Canadian, working as a physician. Graduated from residency at 28, and have been working as a licensed physician since then. Interested in pursuing an MBA to get into healthcare administration. Have plenty of leadership and international experience through my career path.

GPA: 3.7 (undergraduate), 3.3 (medical school)

Open to thoughts on how successful my application could be. Thanks!

Hi kat271,

As per the employment stats, 6% of class of 2019 got placed in the healthcare sector. But gauging from the current situation, this number is surely going to get better in the coming years. You can find out more about it here: https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/programs/m ... t-outcomes

Stanford evaluates your potential based of the following criteria:
1. Intellectual Vitality
2. Demonstrated Leadership Potential
3. Personal Qualities and Contributions

I clearly see a good mix of 1 and 2 in your profile. However, I would like to hear more about your personal qualities and contributions.
In this light, Stanford looks for applicant who is observant of the world around them. Someone who is kind, thoughtful and takes time to get to know other people and understand their problems. Additionally, it would be good for you to also start thinking about what are the gaps in your profile that an MBA from Stanford will help you fix.

The average GMAT for Stanford is 732. However, looking at the unique pool of applicants that you come from, I see a good chance for you to make it to Stanford with a GMAT of 710 . What’s going to matter most in your application is how you connect the experiential dots and build a great story to stand out from other applicants.

Would appreciate an evaluation for my application. Looking to apply to R1 2021 intake. Thanks in advance!

Background: 26-yo female from the Philippines

Undergrad: 3.85/4.00 undergrad GPA, majored in applied math in top local school. Graduated with highest GPA in my program. Also had a fair amount of leadership experience with extracurriculars, leading projects and small teams, but not incredibly significant (not student body president or anything like that).

GMAT: Haven't taken yet but tracking 730 on practice tests without complete review yet. Will be shooting for 760 up. [What score can I get away with?]

Work experience: 3 years analyst in a global investment bank, spent first 2 years in Manila doing country coverage then transferred to Singapore to corporate finance team. Admittedly, didn't have as strong technical background as peers at work (given my math bg vs their accounting / finance bg), but constantly highly rated for communication, other soft skills, and for being a quick learner. Not much leadership exp here as I was mostly working as analyst. Most would have been organizing charity events for our local office. Deal experience spanned Southeast Asia.

Currently doing strategic finance and fundraising for a South / Southeast Asia fintech startup. No leadership title on role or people to manage, as this team is composed of just me + CFO, but have been taking lead on some internal projects with positive feedback from management. I've been at this role for the past year.

Community and others: Taught Finance and Accounting part-time at my home university for 2 years, including mentoring students for competitions such as CFA IRC. Also started a financial advisory business on the side in Jan 2020, leveraging my experience in IB and my current role by advising local and US-based start-ups on creating investor decks, models, valuation, and the like. Also secured a contract from a US fund-of-funds to track their investee company stats on a quarterly basis.

Post MBA goals
Short term: Join a VC / PE / Consulting firm and gain more experience and credibility for my medium/long-term goal (below)
Medium/Long term: Build and grow my current business into a full-blown advisory and financial services outsourcing company in the Philippines

Why Stanford - in line with above, i'm looking for a school with a strong entrepreneurship culture and start-up and VC network

It's great that you have a lot of leadership and international experience; would be interested in learning more about that. Stanford is all about diversity; in additional to being female, and a physician, make sure to accentuate any unique aspects of your background. It's difficult to really assess how well your application will fare without having more qualitative information about you.

I will say, the average age is 27 and the average GMAT is 732; so, you will need to show that you are employable for your post MBA goal being an older applicant, which seems plausible to me, and also, if you feel you could get a few 10 or 20 points on the GMAT and apply in R2 you might want to do that.

Would just need to really bring forth the intellectual curiousity, entrpreneurial spirit, and willingness to question your assumptions.

To be honest, Stanford doesn't really come to mind when I think of HC administration as much as Wharton, HBS, Kellogg, MIT, CBS, and Duke. Unless there is some innovation angle on it.

Feel free to send me your CV for more feedback.

Kat,

I attended a webinar for consultants this morning with Kirsten Moss. She emphasized over and over, both this morning and almost every time I have spoken to her or heard her speak that GSB is most interest in applicants who have taken the initiative to create positive change and contribute to their communities -- however you define your community. It doesn't have to be your neighborhood. And indeed this is what I have observed to differentiate successful Stanford candidate. And she in particular is not going to be focused exclusively on the GMAT. That kind of track record convinces her that you will make a difference in the future and further Stanford's goal of "Change lives. Change organizations. Change the world."

At the same time, I don't think you can ignore that Stanford had last year an average GMAT of 734. That's not by accident.

My advice to you is:

1) If you can, raise your GMAT, especially the quant, do so. However, if you can't, and you can show the initiative that Stanford wants to see, then apply with your current stats.
2) Make the most of the time you have been a change agent throughout the application.
3) Have clear in your mind what you intend to do with your MBA. What do you hope to accomplish in healthcare admin? That end goal is what they will be most interested in. They aren't interested in merely facilitating your move into healthcare administration. They are interested in the kind of change you hope to effect with the education your will get at Stanford.

For more on this, please register for How to Get Accepted to Stanford GSB,a live webinar that I will present on July 8.

Hi Manila Girl,

You have a competitive profile for Stanford assuming that your GMAT stays in the range you are currently getting. A higher score won't hurt you, but a 730 is certainly competitive, especially combined with your academic record.

As I wrote in my previous reply "I attended this morning a webinar for consultants presented by Kirsten Moss. She emphasized over and over, both this morning and almost every time I have spoken to her or heard her speak that GSB is most interested in applicants who have taken the initiative to create positive change and contribute to their communities -- however you define your community. That kind of "change agent" track record convinces her that you will make a difference in the future and further Stanford's goal of "Change lives. Change organizations. Change the world."

Based on what you wrote above, you should be able to present yourself as a change agent in the past and the future.

Regarding your goal, it's OK, but rather vague. What aspects of Stanford's program will allow you to go first into PE/VC ? Be more specific. What do you hope to accomplish with your company when you grow it?

I'd also like to invite you to the webinar I'm giving in a couple of weeks Get Accepted to Stanford GSB.

Hello all, and hope everybody is staying safe! Would love a profile evaluation if possible. I am well aware that GSB is going to be a stretch, so I would love to know if you think I should even bother with an application or if I should save my time and money.

Background:
White Male
Age 26

College:
Finance degree from "Public Ivy" (but not one that's quite UVA/Berkeley caliber) with top 10 undergraduate business school
3.6 GPA

GMAT: 730

Work Experience:
4 years at top real estate mortgage banking firm (though unsure if MBA programs have a sense for what "top" mortgage banking firms are, so not sure how much this helps me). Have held multiple roles within the firm, a path I chose to broaden my skill set.

Extracurriculars:
Admittedly a weak spot. Outside of work I stay involved with a leadership role in my high school's alumni association, which is something I'm passionate about, but I'm not sure how this would be viewed by an MBA admissions office.

Post MBA Goals:
Move to investment side of real estate, leverage Stanford brand and network to help source equity investor relationships. However a lot of the interest in pursuing an MBA is to explore the PropTech field, where I could leverage my real estate knowledge but would certainly be looking at it though a different lens that MBA classes and connections would really help with.

Other comments:
Would be nervous to seek a recommendation from a direct supervisor given economic uncertainty during the pandemic, but could get a good recommendation from a direct supervisor who now works for a competitor.

Hi. Please help me evaluate:

Demographics (nationality, gender): Vietnamese/Pacific Islander American Immigrant, Female, LGBTQ, first-gen college grad, lived in 6 different countries/3 continents, applying R1 2021

· Education (undergraduate institution, GPA, major - high school/entrance exams not needed):
- The University of Georgia, 3.90, Management Information Systems
- I know high school is not needed but I was given a full-ride high school scholarship by Singaporean Ministry of Education
- Top 10% scholarship of my major

· Other coursework or post-undergraduate education:
- Certified Information System Auditor

· GMAT or GRE (include section breakdown):
Expected 740 (Q49, V43-44)

· Work experience (highlight amount of work experience, industries, roles, promotions, special accomplishments, international exposure):
- 3 years 8 months (by matriculation):
2 years as Sr IT Risk Advisor at a non-big 4, international Public Accounting firm
-Early Senior promotions
-Lead several multi-million projects
-Trained 10 employees/ interns
-Led teams of 5
- Focused on recruiting to ensure that the team is balanced and diversed (% of women increased by 200%)
- Financial advisor of a social enterprise during college

1 year 8 months at a top 25 Public accounting firm. Senior with a broader range of projects and impact.

1 year as the co-founder of a tutoring start-up with around 50k profit.

· Extracurricular activities (highlight notable undergraduate and post-undergraduate ones):
- Took a gap year after high school to lead an international team to India and Thailand to build schools and teach English to slum children
- Finance Chair of Women in Tech College chapter where I started an annual coding workshop for low income minority high school students, the first one had 200 attendants
- Active mentor of Big Brothers, Big Sisters since after college
- Logistic head of my neighborhood delivery team: We deliver groceries to seniors/ at-risk people in our neighborhood during COVID time

· Post-MBA goals:
- I want to build a social enterprise focusing on helping LGBTQ Minorities connect through the use of technology (I have a detailed plan but would rather not share in public :))

· Target schools:
Stanford, Harvard, Haas, MIT, Booth, Kellogg, Columbia, Wharton, UCLA, USC (in this order)

Questions: I'm a bit worried that I'm not from MBB/Banking or even the big4. Will that hurt my chance, even though I think I have had really good impacts and leadership. What can I do to improve my chance at Stanford?

Other comments:
Would be nervous to seek a recommendation from a direct supervisor given economic uncertainty during the pandemic, but could get a good recommendation from a direct supervisor who now works for a competitor.

Stanford is a stretch. Is it worth the effort? That's a personal choice.

I'm giving a webinar next week that may help you. Get Accepted to Stanford GSB.

I think you have much of what Stanford is looking for and are applying appropriately. Obviously, you should also apply to the other programs on your list, but if Stanford is your dream school, you should definitely apply to it.

Re: Stanford Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi, I'd be grateful for an evaluation.

Goals after B-School-
Short term - Energy Consultant, get broader exposure in the Energy Space
Long term - Make the world free of un-electrified areas & households; Aiming to do this by drawing on my renewable energy project management background to grow & implement low-cost renewable technologies in developing countries.

Work Experience (can get strong recs, promotions, special accomplishments)
- 4+ years at matriculation; Project Engineer / Design Manager at an ASX 100 listed company ($13bn revenue; 56,000+ employees in Australia);
- 3 promotions + site work around Australia building their newly established energy business (Solar & Wind);
- Drove of internal change in establishing processes; managed teams of 8+ electricians & contractors on specialised technical testing;
- Selected for Internal Leadership course for identified high potential staff (head-hunted for the role as a graduate fresh out of uni)

Education - (in line w/ career goals)
- Bachelors in Renewable Energy Engineering from UNSW (Sydney) - G8 Australian university; 3rd in Australia; top 50
- Graduated with First Class Honours (3 consecutive academic excellence awards)
- Took course due to passion in renewable energy technologies & potential of electrifying India with Solar;
- Interned at the Office of Minister of Power & Renewable Energy (Govt of India)

Extra-curriculars at university
- Elected as School Captain / Head Boy; "Best All-Rounder" & "Best Outgoing Student of the Year" among 700+ matriculating students
- President of Renewable Energy Engineering Society instituted a shift towards meaningful events (panel discussions, indtustry chats, engineering competitions, etc); involved at executive positions in other societies (cultural, student body);
- Senior Cultural Student Mentor (2 years) for international students (organising events; supporting transition into Australia)
- Volunteer trip to Cambodia to build a school for underprivileged kids as an extension of a coursework project

Extra-curriculars since uni -
- Founding member of a non-profit women's welfare organisation in India; focuses on economic empowerment of underprivileged & destitute women;
- Volunteer at AMES Australia (settlement support & skill development for refugees and migrants; in line with interests at uni)
- "Best Male Dancer" award

Why MBA & other comments -
- Want to gain business skills & segway into broader aspects of the energy industry; be an influential leader in low-cost energy space.
- Demographic: Indian/M; studied & worked in Australia for the last 7 years

I'm studying for the GMAT right now & aim to give the test at the end of this month (Looking at 730-740 range).

Would be grateful for any advice / suggestions along with chances.

You have an impressive profile, and assuming the GMAT comes in as anticipated, a competitive chance at Stanford. i encourage you to apply. HOwever, a competitive profile is not the same as an acceptance Also consider Berkeley Haas, MIT Sloan, Michigan Ross, Kellogg, Yale SOM and Duke Fuqua.

Finally, you're invited to join me at Get Accepted to Stanford GSB , a live webinar that I will present on July 8.
