Hi Amit,
You have a very interesting profile indeed. The media background (less represented), experience with different channels and the international experience will all add to your profile. Your goals are aligned with your past experience and you can come up with a solid career goal story. In terms of b-schools, I'd like to make some suggestions. In addition to Stanford, there are more programs that will help you advance your career in media- CBS, Stern, UCLA, USC Marshall are a few more to consider.

While the pool is competitive for Indian applicants, I believe you are a strong applicant and should, therefore, apply to your target programs. We have seen applicants get into top MBA programs with 8+ years' work experience- you'll be required to submit a stellar application that shows your leadership, achievements, maturity, career-purpose and your ability to contribute while at business school.

As a suggestion, you can consider applying to both the Stanford 2 year MBA program and the MSx program. Stanford gives applcants with 8+ years work experience to apply to both programs in one application. You can read more about it here: https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/programs/mba/admission

Currently Stanford is a stretch for you. RAise your GMAT and increase your work experience, or consider other programs that support your goals, like Toronto Rotman, Ross, UCLA, Duke Fuqua, Darden, and Cornell Johnson.

Best,

Hi blackbirdsr71,

I just have evaluated your profile at the Kellogg forum and I think I have sufficiently addressed all your concerns. If this helps you comfort, we have recently helped a candidate, with a 670 GMAT, got invitation for Insead interview (awaiting results) and that too, in R3! So, gmat is just an aspect, not the whole criteria to get into a school. Also, just to make your life a little easier and to address your concern you can look into Stanford's values (by reading this, with patience, I am sure you will know if you should apply to Stanford at all) and how to connect the dots for a good story. I would love to help you resolve any of your other queries :)

Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi,

Would be grateful for a profile evaluation-

Demographic- Indian Male, IITian, 27 YO
GMAT - 720 *3 ( Q50,50,51 ; V38,35,36), 1 Cancelled.

Education-

-BTech Mech Eng (Hons.)- IIT (7.99/10)
-Founding member of a CleanTech startup winning winning multiple national & international B Plan competitions.
-Internship with Transocean (Proposed designs for load enhancement of offshore rig- savings worth 2M$).
-Internship with Audi- Assembly line management.

Goals after B-School/Why MBA-

Motivation – Working at the confluence of Tech and energy industry in the harshest field conditions for 50+ hrs, having skipped out on multiple personal events and having experienced the scarce penetration of digital capabilities in traditional O&G which consequently results in additional work in life challenging conditions for millions of other oilfield workers like myself, I want to pivot to Tech while learning the basics of running a successful business and scaling a company.

Short term - Pursue product management at Amazon(AWS)/ Google(Cloud) and build expertise in developing and commercializing enterprise SaaS products.

Long term - Start an ML-AI based venture which aims to harness the Petabytes of data produced in the Oil and Gas industry to drive smarter data driven decisions in energy prospecting, helping reduce the resources and time spent on hydrocarbon exploration.

Work Experience-

Leading oilfield service co. | Field Engineer-3 promotions | 5 yrs currently | UAE-India-Saudi

-Led 100+ projects for F500 clients in India and Saudi Arabia; managed multinational crew of 6-15 operators, equipment planning, on field logistics and data & service delivery.
-Led very critical high profile projects. Estimated savings of $100M+. Biggest oilfield discoveries for the national oil companies ($5B+)
-Spearheading Digital Transformation for 300+ personnel. Delivering on strong KPOs.
-Lead engineer for mentoring new trainees on and off field. Mentored max. no. of trainees across location.
-Fastrack promotion and client’s preferred engineer for high profile and technically challenging projects. Multiple client and internal recognition letters for exemplary service.
-Can get strong recos from current and former direct supervisor.

Extra-curriculars

College and before-
-Best Student at School. Held 2 athletics records till date.
-Best Athlete in college for 3 yrs. (30+ medals and Inter/Intra collegiate competitions)
-Captain, Institute Athletics team; Led college to first podium finish in 5 years among 16 IITs.
-Organized 7 camps in collaboration with National Level coaches. Helped institute a full time National Level Athletics coach and laid the groundwork for a $400 K budget state-of-the-art 9 lane synthetic track (completed in 2019).

Since College-
-Trekker and coach India’s biggest trekking organization since 2017; Completed 10 (solo + group) treks. Chosen (from 350) to lead an experiential adventure case challenge at India's biggest B School in the Himalayas.
-Instituted college’s first Scholarship fund for meritorious athletes (Contributed INR100k+). Also mentored 100+ athletes over 4 yrs in internship + placement seasons.
-Avid runner + endurance cyclist. Solo cycled to world’s highest motorable road.

Schools:
Reach- Harvard, Stanford; Target- Wharton, Booth, Kellogg; Safety- Tuck, LBS, Columbia, MIT.
Dividing between R1/R2 as follows- 1 Reach, 2 Targets, 2 Safety in each Round

Questions: Need no BS, harsh, honest opinion.
-Biggest concern is GMAT. Been scoring 750+ on mocks consistently but couldn’t convert on actual exam. Have one more attempt left before start of R1 deadlines. Have given back to back GMATs in past 2 months. Considering the Indian Male Engineer over-representation, what would be a good strategy to address the issue? Does persistence count enough to offset low score?
PS: Not looking for ways or tips to improve GMAT.
-Any tips on Optional Essay strategy?
-Should I put in my application for a Reach school with this low GMAT in R1, considering the worst-case scenario of no score improvement in final test?

1. Persistence counts somewhat. Yes a higher GMAT score would be great. However, you have really impressive and international experience. Clear goals. Strong grades. I say try for most of the schools you are aiming for. However, I disagree with your classifying Tuck, LBS, CBS, and MIT as safeties. they aren't. You are competitive at those programs but can't be confident of acceptance at any of them based solely on your numbers. If you are looking for safeties, and I may be stretching here, consider UT Austin, Duke Fuqua, and CMU Tepper. You might be interested in "Which MBA Program is Right for Me? The Ultimate Guide to Choosing an MBA Program"

2. I wouldn't use the optional to write about your GMAT score. There isn't much to say. Use the optional essay to add value to your application in some way. How to do so depends on the wording of the question in each app and more information about you.

3. Yes. if you apply in R1 and are dinged you will need to wait until the next app cycle to reapply to any schools that dinged you R1.

If you'd like help with your applications, we'd be delighted to work with you.

My last question would be the following, between my two Reach schools, Harvard has its deadline coming sooner than Stanford and I believe I can stitch together a great essay for Stanford if I start now vs waiting for my next GMAT score (7 Sept). Should I go for it (trying for at least 1 of my Reach schools this round) or keep both H/S for R2 (Adv- extra time; disadv- not having a significant change in my profile between now and Jan'21)?

If you think you can apply for the R1 deadlines without compromising the quality of your application, I would do so. I'd suggest you go for Stanford since its deadline (Sept. 15) is later than HBS'. You can apply to the other stretch school R2. In the worst case, you'll need to put down a deposit that you may forfeit, but that would also imply that you got into Stanford (or HBS if you decided to apply HBS R1).

Post MBA goals: Venture Capital or heading corporate development as a short term goal. Opening up an early-stage venture capital fund - long term goal.

Kindly evaluate my profile and suggest a honest gmat score.

I'd like to see a 730+ GMAT score, but obviously that doesn't guarantee acceptance and a slightly lower score doesn't guarantee rejection. GSB is a stretch because of the competition more than because of any flaw in your profile. Do apply, but also try other programs that support your goals like Wharton, Booth, NYU Stern, CBS, HBS, MIT Sloan.

Best,
Linda

Hi undergradtomba,

On the surface, your profile looks competitive with great stats. But I would like to know more details of your work experience and ECs to actually comment on your chances to Stanford.

Thanks for your questions! I worked in marketing for a year, supply chain for a year (managed a team of 4), and will have two years of experience managing a >$100m e-commerce business at my current company. I was given a promotion within one month of being hired at my current company. All three organizations have been leading CPGs in their respective categories.

I am the chief volunteer for a local animal rescue, am a photographer in my free time, and have been a competitive athlete for many years (club team in college).

You have a competitive profile for Stanford, but given how competitive Stanford is I suggest you apply to Stanford and other programs that support your goals. Consider HBS, Kellogg, Haas, Duke, Booth, Wharton, Yale .

Thank you very much! I’m applying to Harvard, Wharton, Kellogg, and Booth in addition to Stanford. I appreciate your feedback!
