Hi SIU,

I think you have a great profile and a greater story. You have exhibited your academic rigor through GPAs, scholarships, and GMAT. I honestly loved your work experience as you have it in a varied range of areas which should make your profile a mature one. And then you ultimately found your industry and excelled in it. Yes, a piece of advice for you, make your post-MBA goals more specific like what role do you want to take and what are your long term aspirations. So, overall I feel you can bring a strong story (though Stanford can be a stretch for anyone). The only doubt that I am having is how many years of experience do you have? Because I feel you are on the older side for an MBA and so will need to bring relevance (with this aspect) in your story as well. We are happy to discuss further your chances and would love to hear your story. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hello SIU,
Yours is a tricky one. Your acads are good, but you have a low GMAT score (definitely low verbal). Only monetary success and failure do not count to label your experience as enriching. What will matter are your leadership stories, innovations that you led in this business, if and how your model was unique.
You have diverse experience, but I am missing a common thread here. You must have some great oratory skills to be a sports TV presenter. There is lots of good experience to be tapped in here.
I do not have a sense of how long you have worked in the fintech industry, the number of companies you have worked in. Is your role the same in the bank as that in the startup world? You will have to make sure you answer a lot of career changes in your profile and your story looks coherent.
And bump up that GMAT score if you can.

Hello PosidenDude,
Your GMAT and undergrad GPA can pose a challenge. However, you have great military and leadership experience, and the fact that you are a URM will help your chances. Make sure to explain your reasons and motivations for post-MBA goals in your application. You can also consider other programs at Yale, Booth, and Kellogg.

Given your 2x URM status, military and leadership experience, GMAT score, and engineering major, I'm not worried about your GPA. As I said in the HBS thread, I think you have a good chance at your target schools.

Please assess my profile -

25F US Citizen, Asian Ethnicity

- GMAT: 710; GPA: 3.7
- Top 50 US Undergrad
- Great college extra curricular activities with leadership positions; Internships at one of the MBB and one of the non big 4 consulting firms
- Post college, no real extra curricular activities since work took up most of my time

Work Experience
- 2.5 yrs at a big 4 in tech consulting (promotion in 2yr; highly rated)
- Close to a year of working in my family business in APAC region and my direct work has a big impact on bottom line; Recs will add more information

Post MBA school, I want to work at a non FANG tech company for a couple years and rejoin my family business ($500mn+). Eventually, I want to lead this company and expand into other areas.

Should I be worried about my GMAT score? It is a bit below the average for Stanford.

The competition at Stanford is really tough. It's a stretch. I'm a bit worried about the GMAT and also about the lack of extra curriculars since college. So if you think you can raise the GMAT, I suggest you do so. I also recommend that you get involved in something you enjoy, be it a hobby or community service or combination of the two, and if possible assume a leadership role or a role of responsibility. I realize that there isn't a ton of time for you to do all this prior to R2 deadlines. So you can apply R2 and just see how it goes. Perhaps the details that I don't have from this post will enable your acceptance. If not, you will have almost a year before you would even consider applying again, and anything you start now will be much more significant and impressive by then.

Hi @shrishti246,

Your profile seems competitive. Starting with stats, you have clearly exhibited academic excellence throughout your education. GMAT of 720 is slightly lower than the average (considering your Indian, finance background) and I would say, if you do have time and if it's possible, try to level it up by another 10 points, it will greatly enhance your chances. Your work-experience seems amazing. You have a clear career trajectory, some good mentors in your way (at Kotak), good leadership experiences, and global exposure. So, overall it's good but you will face a lot of competition from your background for Stanford. Now, talking about your ECs, they are pretty amazing. Your music journey, your roles at various national-international organizations, your leadership experience in college, then using your music for social work, so it's all seems really great (if highlighted in an apt manner). For your post-MBA goals, I am not clear like what role do you want to take at these social impact firms, are you thinking to align it with your prior career or deviating from it?

Overall, I would say you have a good profile and if presented aptly and cogently, you do have a shot at top-notch schools. You may like to read this Stanford guide for a better understanding of what Stanford really looks for. We are delighted to hear your story and would love to guide you. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

- Failed Edtech Startup Entrepreneur. Tried launching an Edtech platform that leverages AR Technology to aid classroom teaching and improve student engagement. Got great reviews on the prototype/ product but could not achieve scale.
- Launched 10+ successful products in a myriad of industries ranging from consumer kitchen appliances and medical devices to food automation and textiles.
- Worked in product design firms, startups and small companies in the US where it is hard to show career progression in form of promotions.

Extracurriculars:
- Helped improve rice harvest productivity in my family owned land at my ancestral village with a low cost portable automation system.
- Vice Captain of a minor league hard tennis ball Cricket Team.
-Have a lot more from college days but its been several years since I graduated from it and hence not mentioning it here.

Interests:
Sports – Watch and play most sports
Social Welfare Causes – especially Education and Animal Welfare

Post MBA Goals:
I would like to either join the social sector of consulting firms or the Social Impact group of companies like Google and Amazon to drive the strategy and implementation of solutions to social problems.

Thank you for your time.

Congratulations on your solid GMAT score (solidly above INSEAD’s average) and your top undergraduate GPA. You likely already know you come from a hotly competitive demo, so having these qualifications is important as stats for Indian Men (especially those educated as engineers, are even higher than the high overall averages for top schools like INSEAD).

I’m seeing some headwinds in your extracurriculars, your professional strategic positioning, and leadership profile:
Schools like INSEAD want to see engagement in the community and LEADERSHIP from a civic perspective. Given that you have been out of college for 8 years, you definitely don’t want to be pulling that stuff back into your essays *unless* you can talk about it as a sustained interest (for instance, it sounds like you are currently involved in cricket, if you were also the capital of a rec cricket team in college you can mention this to show longstanding interest and passion AND if you really want to sell it, then look into what cricket EC options exist at INSEAD that you can lead).
Your professional strategic positioning is one of the most important parts of your app. You need to espouse career interests that are imminently achievable given your prior background and also impressive to the AdCom. Your work experience, with the right story-telling, could very well be impressive. Even a “failed entrepreneur” story can showcase grit, guts, stick-to-it-ness and humility. But right now I’m not seeing a cohesive story about what you are passionate about professionally, and, critically, any “breadcrumbs” to a career in big tech. AdComs know what recruiters at Google and Amazon want to see, and they select for candidates that have these resumes already. They want to make sure that they maximize the % employed 3 months after graduation as this is a critical stat for rankings. The way they maximize this metric is not to take chances on people who won’t get what they say they want from a recruiting standpoint. INSEAD does have an alum base in for-profit ed-tech. And there divisions of bigger companies (such as the FAANG ones you mention) that focus on this. Research these opportunities specifically. There might be more “breadcrumb” potential for these type of employers that would make your espoused career arc more plausible and cohesive.
LEADERSHIP/IMPACT - this is critical to INSEAD given that it’s students are several years older than other MBA programs. They want candidates who are already proven leaders, who’ve been promoted multiple times or have had commensurate success working for themselves. That’s what recruiters know they’ll get when they come to recruit at INSEAD (vs. say, HBS, where there are a lot of 2+2 candidates with tons of raw intellectual horsepower, hutzpah and good technical skills). So in order to prove yourself as worthy to the INSEAD AdCom, you’ll need to tell stories about how you generated REAL VALUE (quantified, if at all possible) for your employer or for investors.

The INSEAD application is one of the longest, most comprehensive MBA applications out there. They cover EVERYTHING - from ECs, personal passions, past career successes & failures, prior education, and professional aspirations. Almost every different type of commonly asked MBA application question is in there. A successful INSEAD application then is a tour de force in strategic positioning - you need to know what you are about and sell consistent themes around your well-rounded candidacy. Oftentimes clients think they don’t have impressive enough strategic positioning but they just need a little help with storytelling/branding to tell their story. Hi, y'all. First-time poster here, but long-time trawler for tips. Looking at HBS, Stanford, Booth, MIT, Columbia, but worried I ought to be aiming lower.

Background and nationality
24yo Filipino-Chinese management consultant based in Manila, with work experience in Dallas, Austin, Singapore, Shenzhen, and Penang

Undergrad Information
BS Management Engineering from Ateneo de Manila University. Graduated magna cum laude (3.86/4.00, just a decimal below highest honors), 6th in my batch of 2300+.

GMAT: 740 (Q51, V38, I8, W6) (Side note: Got 119 in my TOEFL, my transcript will show that I received straight A's in university English classes, and I'm a published freelance writer. Hoping that helps shore up my oddly low Verbal, but not sure if that's how that works)

Work experience and leadership

Currently working as VP - Performance Improvement Delivery for a global data analytics and consulting firm, after three years as an associate and analyst. This involves heading an 8-person team of consultants as we develop business solutions for clients in various industries. In particular, I've worked with Manufacturing, Tech, Telecom, Construction, and non-profit firms, and have been deployed in engagements in the US, China, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Community and others

As mentioned, my main extracurricular is having worked as a freelance writer, namely in film criticism. I'm a prolific critic, and have been published on sites like IndieWire and Bright Wall/Dark Room.

In university, I was a department head for the university's Math Society, in charge of fostering math excellence and appreciation in the local community. I also led operations for the launch of an online museum about the Martial Law era in the Philippines.

I'm also a bronze medalist in the International Math Olympiad, which I qualified for as a high school student but participated in during my freshman year of college (that + the prestige is how I justify its inclusion in my apps). For that, as well as other international math competitions, I also received a Youth Excellence in Science citation seven times from the Philippine Department of Science and Technology.

Post MBA goals

Current post-MBA goal is to pivot into the US film industry in an acquisition and distribution role for a company like Netflix or A24, with the hopes of bringing that international experience to eventually establishing an independent film production and distribution company in the Philippines, focused on promoting Filipino indie and arthouse cinema to a global audience.

Anything else?

If I were poking holes at my own application, I'd point to my relatively obscure local university, relative lack of job years for a smaller firm (however, the quality of experience is strong + does show leadership qualities), and the radical industry pivot (though my experience in film criticism does help explain it).

I understand that Stanford is always a reach, but hoping to get an appraisal regardless. Thanks!

I replied to you in the HBS thread and what I said there applied here, except that it's even harder to get into GSB than HBS.

Hi all. I am an incoming student for one of the US MMS programs (Kellogg / Fuqua / etc) and will be looking to apply for deferred entry to HBS / GBS during my MMS year. Was hoping to get some perspectives on my profile and what weak aspects I can work on in the future, even if not for deferred entry then for regular entry down the line.

Goals pre-/post MBA: Consulting post-MMS, Tech Entrepreneurship post-MBA.

Undergrad: Expected high Upper Second Class Honors, Bachelor of Laws at semi-target UK Russell Group Uni (KCL / Bristol tier). GPA equivalent should be around 3.7~3.8 if translated.
GMAT: 790.

Qualifications:
- several business-related certifications on Coursera
- Wall Street Prep financial modelling course (basic package).
- Will also have completed CFA Level 2 by the time of my application (hopefully), along with the HBX CORe Program this summer.
- 3 months at a very well-known coding bootcamp in San Francisco during one of my summers - will be looking to use these programming skills to do an EduTech startup during my time at the MMS.

Professional Experiences: Probably my weakest point as I haven't done internships with any "target" companies.
- Two short summer internships with notable Asian law firms in corporate / M&A type stuff
- one winter internship with a technology startup (sparked my interest in tech entrepreneurship).
- Currently working remotely as a part-time digital marketing intern for a San Francisco-based start-up.
- Doing business development for a start-up this summer in London before the MMS.

Extracurriculars:
- Vice-captain for university football B-team
- Placed in finalist positions for some smaller international case competitions.
- university representative for UK-wide ethnic society for law
- have helped to organise careers workshops for students from impoverished backgrounds and to assist lawyers in defending financially disadvantaged criminals.

So yeah, any feedback would be great on my chances for HBS/GBS 2+2. Appreciate it guys. I think I probably have the "unique" background they might be looking for but my internships may be lacking on the quality front, especially when up against people who have done internships at GS / JPM / MBB etc. Also if anyone has an idea of how I can build up my profile over the next 1.5 years for deferred entry / 3 years for regular entry, would be great!

Solid! Impressive. I was an early career admit to HBS/GSB with 3.93 GPA / 720 GMAT. I think what helped me was raising funding for a startup and convincing folks with combined 200 yrs of experience over me to join, then crashing and burning the startup to the ground because I had no idea wtf I was doing :) What did you dare to do? What did you learn? Outcome is irrelevant. A spectacular failure might make a great essay topic.
