I am applying for deferred MBA admissions programs and would like an objective read on the strengths and weaknesses of my application for HBS, Wharton, Sloan, and other M7 schools with deferred admission.
Senior at UPenn studying Economics with minors in Business Statistics and Data Science, International Development, and Political Science. I will be working at MBB post-grad. In terms of extracurriculars, I founded a cultural/social club, was president of my fraternity and TAd for several courses. My biggest concern is my GPA, which after last semester is a 3.67.
My biggest questions are how this compares to other candidates for deferred programs and if, with this GPA, it is still achievable to be admitted to these schools. I am working hard to prepare for my GMAT (taking late February) and am wondering what score I need to compensate for this weakness.
What GPA do other deferred applicants have (is it on par with the regular cycle or higher) and what GMAT Focus score should I aim for?
Cheers
Hi
ach12345,
You have a solid foundation for your deferred MBA applications. Your GPA, while not ideal for the most selective programs, can be mitigated by strong work experience and a high GMAT score. Here's a breakdown:
Strengths:
Prestigious University: Graduating from UPenn is a significant achievement.
Strong Academic Interests: Your minors in Business Statistics, Data Science, International Development, and Political Science demonstrate intellectual curiosity and a well-rounded academic background.
Leadership Experience: Founding a cultural/social club and serving as fraternity president showcases your leadership and organizational skills.
Target Schools: Your initial target schools (HBS, Wharton, Sloan) are ambitious but not entirely out of reach.
Challenges:
Undergraduate GPA: A 3.67 GPA is competitive but not exceptional for HBS, Wharton, and Sloan. These schools typically have high academic standards.
In your case, aim for a GMAT score in the 700+ range. This is crucial for highly competitive deferred programs. Thoroughly research each program and tailor your application accordingly.
Exceptional Essays:
- Address your GPA: Explain any factors that may have contributed to your GPA and how you have demonstrated academic growth and resilience.
- Highlight your unique experiences: Focus on your leadership roles, academic projects, and personal passions.
- Articulate your career goals: Clearly define your post-MBA aspirations and how a deferred MBA program will help you achieve them.
- Strong Recommendations: Obtain strong letters of recommendation from professors who know you well and can speak to your intellectual curiosity, academic potential, and personal growth.
- Demonstrate Impact: Quantify your achievements whenever possible. Use data and specific examples to illustrate your contributions in your extracurricular activities and academic work.
Explore Other Deferred Programs: Consider deferred programs at other top schools like Kellogg, Booth, Ross, which may be slightly more forgiving of a lower GPA.
