The answer shud be A.

What fractional part of the total surface area of cube C is red?

a. Each of the 3 faces of C is exactly 1/2 red.

b. Each of the 3 faces of C is entirely white.

Statement A is enough to show that the fraction of red colored surface. I hope this helped.

Statement D does not give information on the red surface.

Official Answer is C.

We do not know from one that the other three faces are full red, or no red od some other fraction of red.

Bhai, it is unfair to say "Each of the 3 faces ...", because there are 6 faces for every cube. I think this is misleading... How "FACE" is defined? I don't think the OG has any references to this definition. This question sonds really controversial to me...

I understood what you mean, though. Does ETS give half info .. i mean, when they say EACH of the 3 faces, then it does it not mean, only 3 faces have half red. The other faces, do not have RED in them.?

This looks like a DS and a CR combo.

I think when ETS says that each of the three face if 1/2 red it means that they are talking about just that three faces. They expect from us to not know about the other three faces. Hence A is not sufficient. Thats why we need more info about the other three faces to come to the solution.

Controversial it is !

It seems more like an english twister ;-)
However i just wanted to add what I feel about GMAT maths questions.

Each of the 3 faces have = 3 faces each have

I think the confusion arose because our mind takes
each = each one of them
I know I sound stupid ;)

GMAT problems have tricked me earlier too. I have faced a problem like something below.
There are 150 people. How many are drinkers ?
1. 80% smoke
2. 20% smoke and drink

I created venn diagrams and came up with an answer.
However,
The answer was E because there is no information about people who dont drink or who don't smoke.

That stumped me. I was also shouting THIS IS NOT FAIR then :)

Just wanted to add something here!
I have seen a similar question in one of the mock test, and there also EACH refers to only three faces and not to the "pair of the three faces".
Hence I think in such questions it is safe to assume that "EACH" means only one face and not the "each of the opposite faces".
