Hi, I have to answer this question in one of my applications... "Please mention your academic achievements including awards, honors?"
Now, I had an excellent academic record at school but when I moved to college, it was nothing exceptional (still above the avearge), because I decided to focus on Sports.
How should I approach this question? Will it be right to talk about the academic achievements at School? Should I explain to adcom (in the optional essays) why I did not have a stellar academic record in College?
I have six years of work experience, not sure how significant will be the academic performance?
Thanks
Kris
Hey Kris,
Its always best to mention the latest achievements in the responses to such questions. So school achievement may not carry so much weight-age. And when they say academic, you need not just stop at what you did in college. You can also include any paper/dissertations you did, any research you were part of etc.
And using the optional essay must be a careful decision. Use it only if you have any obvious red flags on your application. Like very low GPA or gaps in employment. Otherwise no need to use it to explain all weaknesses in the app. Ad com looks at the overall profile and they do understand nobody can present a perfect application. Read this useful tweet about adcom's perspective. MJ Shores, UCLA tweeted this tip

Don't let 1 weakness prevent you fr applying to b-school. #Admissions is made across criteria. We know u don't walk on H2O.
Hope this helps! All the best !
