What if I don't have work experience and I graduated in 2017? I was preparing for this national level civil service exam leading to bureaucracy but after two years of utmost struggle as much as I could possibly do, I couldn't make it. I don't regret it. I learnt a LOT. But I'm facing a serious dilemma. What should I say in the personal statement essay? Should I be honest or make up a story. I know it's a rather blunt way of putting it but as I have sat down to write my personal statement/essay, I just couldn't put a single word on page for the last four hours!

This can happen with many applicants who prepare for the UPSC examinations. No worries - you should be honest in your applications. The critical part will not be explaining that, but rather explaining why you want to change tracks now, and what your future goals are.

Hi, sir. I’m so glad to come across you because you truly understand the UPSC thing. It’s hard to explain it to most people.

Sir, I’m really not sure what to do. I’ve heard that admission committees really don’t care why one would “waste” two years on an exam. Plus, I’m finding it really hard to explain why I want to study Finance now. I truly love Finance. It’s been my passion since forever. But since I have no work experience, I’ve no way to prove my passion. I’ve no way to explain why I chose to go for a civil services route when my passion was Finance. How do I explain my past decision to go for civil service exams and my current decision to pursue my passion to study finance? I’ll be forever grateful for your help in this hour of need. Thanks sir.

Hey simonden4,

An SOP is a very important document in your application that can affect your chances of admittance by 30%. That said, if you bluntly mention that you were preparing for several service exams and were not doing anything in those past two years you may get an instant rejection, and it will be very difficult for you to showcase your profile on this really competitive land scale.


What I would suggest you do is dig deeper into your profile and experiences so far. Be honest to share your life story, your motivation, and lesson learned while preparing for the national-level civil service exam and in addition to this, mention any other extracurriculars (for example NGO) you participated in while bringing to light the learning you gained from the same.

So, basically you need to create a story to show how you realized that now a Business management career is the next step meant for you and mention the goal behind it.
It is very important that you focus on this aspect otherwise the decision of pursuing a masters might look like a back-up option to your civil services aspiration.

You need to look into your profile, you have to brainstorm and figure out what to pitch and what you can do to showcase your profile as uniquely different from that of the other applicants.
