🚨 MYTH: If you’re an 'older' MBA applicant, you're at a disadvantage.
✅ TRUTH: If you're an 'older' applicant, you have something younger candidates don’t—clarity, depth, and a stronger case for impact.
Yet, every year, I hear this fear: “Am I too old for an MBA?”
Let’s settle this.
In Round 1, one of my MBA ABC-ers—someone with more experience than the so-called 'ideal' applicant—applied to Stanford GSB and HBS.
Some “highly rated” MBA consultant told this candidate that being an older applicant would hurt their chances.
In reality, they got into both HBS and the GSB.
🎯 Why? Because their application didn’t just check boxes.
It told a compelling story of leadership, growth, and purpose. They owned their experience and showed why an MBA wasn’t just a next step—it was the right step.
If you’re wondering whether your age is a weakness, let me remind you: Your story is what sets you apart.

Yes and as an older candidate you also have a lot of accomplishments and you would have already held the positions that your classmates only dream about getting... .
So what can an older candidate with 15 years of work experience gain out of a Full-Time MBA program? What kind of on-campus recruiting can they count on?

Great question - and the answer will be very individual in each case. One of the last candidates with 15 years of experience I worked with, who got into HBS, was looking to start a search fund. So OCR was not their goal.
But you bring up a great point. For more experienced candidates, there are two things to consider:
1. Is the person's position/level on par for someone with this length of tenure? Have then been promoted? Are they on an upward trajectory? Or are they lagging behind peers? That's one thing schools will definitely look at - are you where you should be for your years of experience.
2. Are recruiters at your target companies hiring people with this level of WE for the positions you are targeting as STG. Because if they are not, then it becomes clear the candidate has not done their homework to uncover that. And this makes their STG unfeasible and their overall career vision weak. In this environment and for an int'l candidate, that can be the end of the road.

I think I know the candidate you are talking about - they had military background/experience. Or at least that matches the profile I have seen on GMAT Club a few years ago....
