Everyone's B school experience is unique- and really like anything- what you put in determines a lot about what you get out of the experience. While my own Kellogg experience is many years past now, I can say that I will never forget the feeling of what it was like to be at a place where I knew everyone wanted to be there. When I was at Kellogg it was a time when we were consistently ranked as the #1 business school and there was a real buzz in the air about the place. I think all the top programs have that feeling- like everyone there is very excited for the opportunity- there is a lot of unspoken pressure- even for faculty themselves to be fabulous and keep being at the top of their field, for students to maximize their opportunities and for everyone there is a sense that this is a place where friendships and relationships are forming that could lead to big things. My advice is to embrace it 100%. It is a short time really- so make the most of all of it which means that for the time you are in B school there won't be much work/life balance- it is all going to be related to work- but B schools have a way of even making the work fun. So get involved, set high goals for yourself, learn how to reach out and ask for advice and just be fully engaged. Spend time now clarifying your career goals as best you can so that you are strategic in what activities and clubs you seek while in B school. Thanks to another GMAT Club member, I have just discovered this valuable topic, yet it had no discussion for over a year. I am now bumping it up - doing my job. I think you may find it valuable (esp those replies with Kudos).
