Both statements give the same result which is 9/4. greatest integer less than 9/4 will be 2. Is there some hitch there or the question is downright easy :roll:

What is the greatest integer that is less than t?

(1) t = 9/4
(2) t = (-3/2)^2

so when you divide 9/4 = 2.85 so the greatest integer less than 2.85 is 2? is this correct? Answer D

Yes, that's correct: both statements say that t = 9/4 =2 1/4, the greatest integer less than t is 2.

Answer: D.

What is the greatest integer that is less than t?

(1) t = 9/4
(2) t = (-3/2)^2

We need to determine the greatest integer that is less than t.

Statement One Alone:

t = 9/4

t = 2 ¼, so the greatest integer less than t is 2. Statement one alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Statement Two Alone:

t = (-3/2)^2

Again, t = 2 ¼, so the greatest integer less than t is 2. Statement two alone is sufficient to answer the question.

What is the greatest integer that is less than t?

(1) t = 9/4
(2) t = (-3/2)^2
This easy question can be used to illustrate an important DS point. The point is - we don't need to find the answer.

- If we know the value of t, we will know the greatest integer less than t.
- Statement 1 and Statement 2, both give us the value of t.
- So we can find the answer from either Statement 1 or Statement 2.

So the answer is D.

We don't need to simplify the expressions. We don't need to find out what the greatest integer is. In fact, to work out the answer would be a waste of time.
