What is the median score of the class?
(1) Fifty percent of the class got scores higher than 70.5.
(2) Fifty percent of the class got scores lower than 70.5.
Neat question.
We often assume that the most obvious situation is the right one. When the GMAT says 'lower than 70.5' and 'higher than 70.5', we like to think, subconsciously, that we're looking at a bunch of 70s and a bunch of 71s. Even if you think about other situations briefly, it's easy to assume that they'll work out the same way as that one. The way to avoid this kind of mistake is by actually writing down the specific cases you're testing.
To save time, make the cases as simple as possible. I'm going to do that by having a class with only 2 people in it.
(1)
One person gets a 0, one person gets a 100. Median = mean = 50
One person gets a 20, one person gets a 100. Median = mean = not 50
Insufficient.
(2)
Same cases as above.
Insufficient.
(1+2)
Same cases as above (since they work for both statements).
Insufficient.
