i can't see a way. 24/XM*2/XM can'tr yield a value.

48(XM/XM) can be 48 or undefined i.e. if XM = 0

This question is from Challenge 2, OA says it is C. I picked E too. OA must be wrong

I would say C.

The reason beeing :
if A has a solution which is : 2/xm , then xm cant be 0.
we should not consider xm = 0 as a possible if A has such solution.

Let s not be trickier than GMAT
therefore C may be the answer

what's the OE Praveen ? I wud agree with "C" if it had said that A and B are real numbers.

it says A = 2/xm so ixm cannot be zero..
therefore, C is the answer.

Problem is we don't know any info on A or B, they could be imaginary

I don't quite agree with OA C

I guess I am not sure if such controversial problems appear in GMAT

First, GMAT does not deal with imaginary numbers so we must assume that A and B are real numbers. Second, IIRC a number divided by zero does not yield imaginary numbers.

If I were to do this question, I would assume that A is a real number (instead of undefined). The answer thus would be C. In real GMAT test, I wouldn't be surprised if it specifies that x and m are not zero, or A and B are real, though this would make this question very easy.

The answer C IS Correct.
Here's why
A => 2/xm
B => 24xm (NOT 24/xm)

A* B => 2/xm *24xm => 48

i agree either this question will be made easier on GMAT (if it appears ) or we can assume that A and B are real..

Honghu, you are right, I ment undefined & not imaginary. May be we should just correct this problem in challenge 5 to avoid such confusion. I doubt ETS would get into controversy like this.
