Lets start with the easy one. 1/5 * 4000 = 800. So options A and B are out.

Now when we want lets say 15 percent of a number, we multiply 15/100 to that number. In the same way if we want 1/5 percent of a number, we'll multiply that number by 1/5/100 OR \(\frac{0.2}{100}\) OR \(\frac{1}{500}\). \(\frac{1}{500}\) of 6,000 is 12.

800 + 12 = 812.
Answer D

Yes, LamboWalker has it correct above. Remember, percent means for each one hundred. Thus, we can translate "1/5 percent" as the following:

\(\frac{1}{5} * \frac{1}{100}\)

\(\frac{1}{500}\)

Now, you could either turn this fraction into a decimal, or you could use it directly to figure out the number in question:

\(\frac{1}{500} * 6000 = \frac{6000}{500} = 12\)

Thus, 12 should be added to "1/5 of 4,000," or 800, and, as outlined above this post, the answer should be (D). You should edit the original post to reflect the correct answer.

Hey,

This is not as bad as it seems when you break it into parts

The key is to remember what "percent" really means

It means per cent, per hundred

In number terms that can be written as /100

x% = \(\frac{x}{100}\)

You just put the number over 100, or multiply it by \(\frac{1}{100}\)


Let's put the information given to us in those terms then:

\(\frac{1}{5}\)% of 6000 + \(\frac{1}{5}\) of 4000 =

\(\frac{1}{5}\) * \((\frac{1}{100})\) * 6000 + \(\frac{1}{5}\) * (4000) =

\(\frac{1}{5}\) * (60) + 800 =

12 + 800 = 812

The answer is D

1/5% of 6000 + 1/5 * 4000 = 1/500 * 6000 + 800 = 12 + 800 = 812
Hence, OA is (D).
