Statements 1 and 2 are not sufficient on their own. Statement 1 provides no relationship between a and b, while in Statement 2, the relationship between X and Y is not known. Hence, we can eliminate A, B and D.
Combined
The statements combined don't help either as multiple values of a and b satisfy both the equations.
Case 1: a = b = 1
In this case, X < 120 & Y < 144.
a - b = 0
Case 2: a = 1 ; b = 0
In this case, X < 120 & Y < 144.
a - b = 1
As we have multiple answers to the target question, the statements combined do not help either. Eliminate C.
