(1) A + B = 10
(2) B + C = 20

Question stem:- A+C=?

Statement-1
A+B=10
No information is provided about C.
So, A+C can have more than one value. Hence, insufficient.
Statement-2
B+C=20
No information is provided about A.
So, A+C can have more than one value. Hence, insufficient.
(1)+(2), we have 2 equations and 3 variables, hence we can't calculate A+C definitely. A+C can have more than one value.
Hence, insufficient.

Ans. (E)

Solution

To find:
    • The value of A + C

Analysing Statement 1
“A + B = 10” …………………………. (1)
    • From this statement, we cannot find the value of A + C as we don’t have any information about C

Therefore, Statement (1) ALONE is not sufficient to answer this question

Analysing Statement 2
“B + C = 20” …………………………. (2)
    • From this statement, we cannot find the value of A + C as we don’t have any information about A

Therefore, Statement (2) ALONE is not sufficient to answer this question

Combining Both Statements
    • To get the value of A + C, we need to add the two equations. (1) + (2) gives,
      o (A + B) + (B + C) = 30
      o A + 2B + C = 30
      o (A +C) + 2B = 30
    • To find the value of A + C, we should have some additional information about B
    • However, we don’t have any information about B

Thus, Statement (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient

Hence, the correct answer is option E.

Answer: E
