Official Explanation

Answer: E
Statement (1) is insufficient. Move the x's to the right side and the b's to the left:
b + b = x + x
2b = 2x
b = x
Unless we know the value of x, we can't find the value of b.

Statement (2) is also insufficient. Move the x to the right side, and the result is b = x. That's the same as (1)! Since both statements are insufficient on their own and identical, the correct choice is (E). There's no way to put them together to answer the question.

Hope it helps :lol:

What is the value of b ?

(1) b - x = x - b
(2) b - x = 0

GH-10.16.13 - OE to follow

from 1, b=x
from 2, b=x

1+2, still the same. so E.

will gmat ask this type of Q?

This is easiest type of algebra question you can get on the test.

How about taking X as constant? How do we know X is a variable here?

You are overcomplicating a simple problem. b and x there are some numbers.
