What is the value of |x| ?

(1) x = –|x|

\(|x|=-x\) implies that \(x\leq{0}\). Not sufficient.

(2) x^2 = 4

Taking the square root gives \(|x|=2\) (\(x=2\) or \(x=-2\) --> in either case \(|x|=2\)). Sufficient.

Answer: B.

What is the value of |x| ?

(1) x = –|x|
x + |x| = 0 means that x could be 0 or x <0. INSUFFICIENT!

(2) x^2 = 4
\(\sqrt{x^2}=|x|=2\). SUFFICIENT!

Asked: What is the value of |x| ?

(1) x = –|x|
x is negative but value can not be determined
NOT SUFFICIENT

(2) x^2 = 4
x = {2,-2}
|x| = 2
SUFFICIENT

IMO B

If by “under root 4” you mean √4, that is equal to 2 and we consider that in the first case.
