3|x^2 – 4| = y – 2 can be written as

3(x^2 – 4) = y – 2 ---------(1)
3(x^2 – 4) = -y + 2 --------(2)

from 1 and 2,

y == 2.

I havn't given all the MGMAT tests yet. I am planning to do that next week.

Here equating the two equations will not help as these two equations are for two different conditions.

If you look at stmt1, left side is >=0. Hence, for the right side to be >=0, y >=2 and there is no single value of y. Hence, stmt1 is insufficient.
