HA HA HA ... of course nobody is going to business school to make more money. We are all choosing to give up two years of salary and then work ridiculous hours because we love finance and business strategy so much.

You kids kill me!!

I will give you points for an iron clad argument, but let us not pretend that we know what everyone wants. Let everyone be - Let us have our fairy tale please - Let us support each other and respect each other's dreams. Not everyone knows exactly what they want. So let us make our mistakes - let everyone get into b-school thinking they want to improve their lives and make a difference in someone else's life - if this does turn out this way, we at least won't regret not taking a shot.

If making more money is your fairy tale, you are a very practical person and I respect your clarity of thought. No matter what we do, the need of money is implied. We want to do what we love, but that does not mean I am ready to accept a minimum wage for it.

I buy your argument only so long as you wrote exactly this and not some kiddish(according to you) goal, such as the desire to improve the world around you, in your application.

My ultimate goals:

1. To spend time with the good people (friends, family, etc.) around me
2. To see my kids accomplish more in their lives than I have in mine
3. To be challenged every day at my job
4. Retire by the age of 60!

LOL I guess I read too much into "ULTIMATE goal of life" ... kids are a long time away, a few steps still remain before that becomes a reality (thank God!)

Well, I guess I'll share my kiddish goal too.

Basically, I want to erase the barriers of social mobility so that everyone (in America at LEAST) who works hard can actually achieve the American Dream, regardless of his or her background.

On a more personal level, I'd like to repay my family for everything they've given me and everything they have helped me become. And finally, I'm an old fashioned girl, so I want a loving husband who is intelligent with the charm of a southern gentleman :)

Steel if you end up at Kellogg, we will have to organize a ski trip. I used to be a coach. My wife and I pretty much ski every weekend.

Believe me - Kellogg's annual ski trip that 2/3 of the school participates in is a big selling point

I am envious though! I usually ski once or twice a year and would love to ski a lot more. I am definitely down for ski planning - one of my favorite things to do. I have thought on more than one occasion what kinds of innovative business models could be applied to snow sports. Nothing has sparked yet - but I haven't given up hope!

You kids kill me!!

Well to be fair that is the crux of my whole point. The entire business school application process is a clinic on measured deception and hoop-jumping.

-We spend countless hours creating convincing arguments for why MULTIPLE schools are the perfect fit for us and why we would never want to go anywhere else.
-We spend countless hours describing in great detail exactly what we have always wanted to do with our lives with full knowledge that 75% of us will change our minds while we are in school (of course, one of the main reasons to go to business school is to see the possible options and DECIDE what we want to do)
-We spend countless hours explaining why we have such a strong academic, professional, and leadership background (often with calculated exaggeration) that we could get the job we want without business school. Those who actually NEED a business education are not welcome.
-We spend countless hours preparing perfect answers to interview questions in such a way that they don't appear rehearsed.

Yes, my application explains how I have always wanted to give back to the world. Just as it explains why Wharton, and Kellogg, and Sloan, and Haas, and Ross are ALL the perfect school for me to reach those lofty goals.

Perhaps I am cynical. But I just find it funny that NO ONE on the site will admit that a big part of why they are going to school is the dancing money signs that sleep with them each night. Certainly some people have much nobler intentions, but they are by all accounts a minority.

livehard, You are welcome to have that opinion. However, if you read the posts closely you will notice that almost everyone said that money will be NICE but that they consider other things like peace, happiness, friends, family and the opportunity to do some good, more important than money. No one said they dont care about money. Sure, all of us care for money to a certain degree, but as hard as this is for you to swallow, there are several people here who want to be able to create a positive impact, even in a small manner, through their personal and professional endeavors.

I request that you while voicing your own opinions, also respect what others say. I have my own opinion about what I want in life and while it differs with what others posted to a certain degree, I did not ridicule their thoughts or desires. If you notice, my response to you was my 1st post in this thread. If you cannot contribute positively to a thread, then your response is best left unwritten.

That is a fair request. However, I'm not sure what I said in my last post that ridiculed others. And I certainly hope that a dissenting opinion can still be a positive contribution.

Just dont use words like "you kids". In my book, it is a careless comment at best and this was not the 1st time you did it. Even if you dont see things my way and consider your post completely innocent, I am sure there are many who felt that your comments are insulting. Remember this is an international board and people here have varying sensitivities.

Please allow me to make a few points. I think you did much better with your second attempt. Unfortunately, you have earned a different reputation from the few posts you have on the forum and it will just take some time for everyone to see the positive side in your disagreements. I will be on your side just because we want to be inclusive and want to give everyone a fair shot.

As I always say, when someone posts anything on an online forum, it is difficult to either see the nuances on their face or hear the tone of their voice - so in the real world, a perfectly honest argument said slowly and clearly will come across as loud and arrogant in the online world.

We can disagree all we want - just use positive words and reason - they are our best friends in a 'faceless' environment .

Take it easy :)

haha - I like everyone right up until the point they piss me off.

Dont worry - sometimes it takes time for some people to understand how GMAT Club works. I have made it my policy to stay away from using my so-called authority for anything. It is very difficult sometimes, but I must practice what I preach.

livehard, I think most of the other mods have said what I wanted to say already, but do watch how your typed words may be perceived in a "toneless" medium.

As for "no one" on the site admitted a big part is $$, I offer you my 2nd reason, which I thought was quite clear:

Quote:
- To make enough money so I never have to worry about $$ again: I don't need to get filthy rich (though I wouldn't mind :P), but I want to have enough money that I can have the mobility to move wherever I want, travel wherever I want, and buy whatever I want (within reason). I probably won't go out and buy a 40-ft yacht or a Ferrari, but if I want that nice Audi S5 or move to NYC and rent a place in Greenwich Village, I don't want to worry about finances too much.
