Hello all,

I searched around a bit, but all I found was hundreds of "software engineer" posts asking for evaluations.

What software did you use while in school? Is there anything beyond MS Office that would make school and assignments better/easier? If you had a blank check to buy software that would be useful while in school, what would you buy?

Thanks, I have an opportunity to buy at wholesale discount, so I want to load up on what I'll need.

I would maybe buy Crystal Ball, because that is actually pretty cool.

I hardly thought any of the statistical analysis software used in Business School progressed beyond luddite. If they need you to use anything technical they find a way to make it available.

I should qualify all this by pointing out that a week before graduation, I bought Matlab so I could get it at the student discount (which is enormous). So I am a software nerd.

crystal ball is pretty good. another one is @Risk (which is similar to crystal ball). you might want to hold off until you start the school year, since you might be able to get it for cheaper through the school

I would also put in my vote for Crystal Ball. I haven't needed it at school - and don't know if I will next year - but have used it in my internship for the summer and really like it.

Probably 95% of what you do in school will be within Office. For the other bit, you're better off waiting to know what software your school/class will use. First, you get a discount while at school, and second - at least for some of the stats software we've used - some of the datasets we needed for class were in the format of the program the professor recommended for the course.
