A)..."what was..." is ok b/c the event happened in the past. "has been" is ok b/c there is still not +ve or -ve reaction.

IMO B) is out b/c "compete as female" is wrong. "as" should be followed by a plural noun.

What is singular.

so what was....... has been is perfect.

I choose A for that reason.

I go with B
A is wrong because "what was far more surprising....." refers to public reaction, therefore the tense should be same and this mistake has been corrected in B

B is the best IMO. The comparaison is well established and the tense of the verb is correct.

B

Compete AS females. Transexuals competing AS females in a competition, you can't compete LIKE females, you're either a female or a male in a competition, therefore, B is correct.

I originally chose A but LIKE and AS made me decide that B is better.

B is best.
Transsexuals are competing as females, not like females.
Also, B has parallelism.
The thing that has been far more surprising than the Olympic Committee permitting transsexuals to compete as female has been the lack of worldwide reaction, whether positive or negative.

I agree with jerrking that "As" shoud be better than"Like" The point is meaning
To see more example
She is a fine singer, as her mother used to be
Like her mother, she is a fine singer
so leave choice A and D
-------------------------------------------------------
In choice C---leave me alone in toilet
------------------------------------------------------
so B is the best choice, even though "the thing" is meaningless!!!
--------------------------------------------------------
Keep your smile :-D

In my opinion C is correct.

(A) What was far more surprising than the Olympic Committee permitting transsexuals to compete like females

- Tense error.

(B) The thing that has been far more surprising than the Olympic Committee permitting transsexuals to compete as female

- 'The thing' is not clear.
- female should be 'females' since we are comparing with 'transsexuals'.

(C) More surprising than the Olympic Committee granting permission for transsexuals to compete as females

- Consise and looks correct.

(D) The Olympic Committee permitting transsexuals to complete like females do has been more surprising than

- Usage of 'like' is not correct.
- I am not sure if 'females do' is correct or not.

(E) The Olympic Committee granting of permission for transsexuals to compete as female was more surprising than

- Tense error and not in accordance with rest of the sentence.

OA please....
