I'm about to downgrade as well. The factory warranty is about to expire within a year on my Audi A4, and I'm looking to get rid of it before I move. The car has been surprisingly reliable (for an Audi), but I need to get something cheap, more reliable, and something I won't have to worry about leaving parked for long periods of time in a city.

I'm looking at late 90s Honda Accords and Toyota Corollas.

not helpful, rhyme.

and the xa fell through. the inspection was great, but the dealer just wouldn't come down.

My max was 8000 and the sticker was 8700. I was willing to go out the door at 8700, but no juice. I walked like the toughy I am. Maybe they'll call me back. Now I am drowning my sorrows in rum. So so so sad. The guy tried to make out like he'd only make $100 anyway, but me doubts it.

goBears: Yeah, Audi's have been very reliable of late. I love my A4 so far. :) Was tempted to get the new B8 A4's... but will wait after I graduate, haha.

Aau, why don't you use private sellers? It takes more due diligence, but is usually a lot cheaper than dealerships...

oh, i am going after both kinds. you are going to laugh, but i am on a hatchback or bust mission. there aren't tons of those in my price range, so i'm checking any and all comers.

Awful mileage, 1960's safety, and all the reliability of a mid-80's Hyundai. OK, that's a bit of an exaggeration; I did put in an overdrive transmission, high-backed seats and shoulder belts, and the Ford Windsor block V-8 is one of the most reliable engines ever made. It's also got all of 150 miles on a ground-up restoration. Once the AC is installed it should be a pretty usable as an occasional daily driver.

It's paid for and it's *cough* super cute *cough.* Fortunately I'll be living by campus so its usage will be pretty limited.

If I were in the market for something economical and reliable and still somewhat fun, I'd probably go for a 2002-2003 Subaru Impreza (add some $ for the WRX version).

No, it's actually pretty easy - cars aren't abused by winter and the values here tend to be a bit lower than nationwide. But I wanted something really particular: a hatchback with good gas mileage, under a 100k miles, decent to excellent reliability ratings. And since I'm paying cash, I didn't ave a ton of dough.

Really, bluedevil25 used to work in cars and he told me I'm a nightmare buyer. And proud of it.

I would have flown to SF and carjacked Kryzak for his Audi :2gunfire: :-D

I actually did a marketing project for GM on the Vibe when I was in undergrad. I kind of liked it, but I don't think it has sold very well.

congrats!
i sadly know very little about cars - going to the mechanic is just a painful experience! I have a used 2001 Hyundai Sonata (bought it from a guy who was moving out of country and had to sell fast - great for haggling ;)) and hope I can still keep it when (not if) I get to B-school....

buy a scooter.. suzuki bergman.. i am pretty sure no one can catch up with you.

my ducati 749 gives me 50 miles to a gallon. and thats when i ride at 90 mph.. when i ride slower, milage falls to 35.. strange but that how race bikes are

i think if i buy a car.. it will be the smart car.. i am not so ga ga on safety.. all cars are intrinsically safe, since all have roll and crash cage. and majority of the accidents are t-bone or rear end.... its a really fun car and if somone can put a turbo charger into that phone booth.. it will kick ass

for fuel pinchers.. nothing beats the geo metro.. crap of the 90s.. jewel of 2008..

i cant understand toyota's logic for scion. The scion is very popular in Japan and is very very fast.Its just the reverse here.
If you guys are into the small car thing, check out the Nissan cube. It should get released in USA this year.. its a shoe box on 4 wheels but a funky one.

and if i get money .. 2009 nissan skyline GT-R.. :P
