I depends on the deadline. Some schools have R1 deadlines in November. UCLA was pretty late this year, I am pretty sure theirs didn't get officially posted until November. I believe Harvard has theirs out at the very beginning of August since they have a very early R1 deadline.

But you don't necessarily have to wait till then. Start working on why mba, why now, why school X. Pretty much every school asks for at least a variation on these themes.

I will definitely work on that and visit schools as well. Is it worth it to look at last years essay and start working on it? Do they change dramatically?

Haven't UCLA's essays stayed the same over the past few years?

Don't know about UCLA. I am looking at HBS, Stanford, Wharton and Kellog for R1. Not sure if they have changed much.

Kelloggs doesnt change much year to year, if you are looking to apply there you can definitely get a head start with the first three essays. The options for essay four may change but last year they were ones from the prior year (they just eliminated a few options). I lot of schools I looked at had essays available end of July to mid August. You can also get a head start on your package to give to your recommenders.

Haas, UCLA, and Stanford stay pretty similar. There will ALWAYS be a "Why MBA, Why Now, Why this school" essay, so start writing that first! It'll help you tremendously with every other school (you can pretty much cut and paste over 50% of that essay for many schools).

UCLA's family essay is new this year, but the leadership one is the same.

Haas has a few new ones, but most are the 250 word essays. The leadership one is generally there

try to prepare a 500 word optional essay for those schools that let you. I used one to talk about community service and extracurriculars, and was able to use it on all my schools except for Stanford (which did not allow optional essays except for extenuating circumstances)

Stanford will always have the "What Matters Most" or "What motivates you" type essay... start writing that.

I think that's it from me. Haas and Stanford's essays came out by August, so you'll have plenty of time if you finished drafts based on this year's essays already.
