- when does everyone actually START their essays for R1??
- how many versions til you stopped hating your drafts?
- is ChatGPT helpful or any other ways you recommend to draft essays?

I presume you have your score in hand and have done basic research to shortlist the five schools. For R1 deadlines, you should have already started on multiple fronts by now: reflections on your career and life to identify meaningful stories, CV, attending webinars/events, networking with adcom, alumni, and students, getting the basic narratives for essays, and connecting with your recommenders.
However, there is nothing to get overwhelmed by. It is a process and a marathon, not a sprint. Your 90-day countdown is already on. Plan well and execute even better.
Keep away from ChatGPT. Do not use it at all for your applications.

My Round 1 candidates are already writing essays. Depending on the school, you may go through anywhere from 5 all the way to dozens of drafts.
It's funny because one of my 1:1 candidates moderated one of the GMAT Club event sessions this week and she was a bit stunned at how many people who say are applying in R1 have not started the work yet.
