When purchasing a souvenir on holiday in another country for D dollars, Len has to pay a t percent sales tax. When bringing it back to his own country, he must pay an import tax of t/2 percent of the price he paid for the item, including sales tax. Including both taxes, what is the total amount that Len pays for the item?

A. \(D(1+0.015t+0.00005t^2)\)

B. \(D(1+0.015t+0.0005t^2)\)

C. \(D(1.2t^2)\)

D. \(D(1+0.15t+0.05t^2)\)

E. \(D(1.015t^2)\)

We are given that Len purchased an item for D dollars and paid t percent sales tax. After tax, the cost of the item was:

D(1+ t/100)

He also has to pay an import tax that is t/2 percent of the price including tax. Thus, he pays:

D(1 + t/100)(1 + (t/2)/100) = D(1 + t/100)(1 + t/200)

Let’s rewrite the expression as follows:

D(1 + 0.01t)(1 + 0.005t)

D(1 + 0.01t + 0.005t + 0.00005t^2)

D(1 + 0.015t + 0.00005t^2)

Answer: A
