3. The following appeared in a memorandum from the business department of the Apogee Company:
“When the Apogee Company had all its operations in one location, it was more profitable than it is today. Therefore, the Apogee Company should close down its field offices and conduct all its operations from a single location. Such centralization would improve profitability by cutting costs and helping the company maintain better supervision of all employees.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.
The reasoning that Apogee Company should shift all its operations to a single unit to cut costs and supervise all their employees to be more profitable is very poorly reasoned for few reasons.
Firstly, it is possible for the Apogee Company to have their offices in multiple regions, countries, or even continents which has not been mentioned. If any of the stated might be true then it could be equally or even more difficult and expensive to provide their service/product in the particular region.
This could very well make them lose the market and possibly decrease their total revenue.
We have also not been told if all the branches of Apogee Company have recently started their operations or have been in that particular market for a brief period of time and still have not been able to book profits. As it is difficult to enter into new markets and this might be the period where they might be expanding their operations, they are bound to be less profitable. It would be wrong of us to assume that all their branches have been in operation for a brief period without being at the maximum profit levels.
The argument might say that having centralization would improve profitability by cutting costs and improve supervision, it fails to understand the difficulty of housing and managing employees from the rest of the branches, which were shut, and to deliver to their clients across the market. With all the employees under one roof managing operations for multiple regions, it might be chaotic and decrease employee efficiency.
Nevertheless, I do believe if Apogee Company is having multiple branches in the same city which might increase operating costs then they should close down and move to a central location which will decrease the operating costs as there will be less hiring, less wastage, and fewer chances of miscommunication amongst the managers.
If we can get a clear answer on the first three points then I believe we can make a much better and reasoned decision on whether to bring all the operations to a central location.
