Incorrect.
This answer choice is stylistically flawed. Look at the following clause:
- it was fundamental to implement and apply it
The first it serves as a subject replacement, and the second it serves as a pronoun, referring to coaching. While this is not grammatically incorrect, it is is confusing and creates ambiguity.
What helps us identify this question as a Pronoun question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:
- Every pronoun in the underlined part of the sentence or after it
In addition, the phrase implement and apply is wordy and redundant. In the present context, both words mean roughly the same thing.
B. coaching because it helped managers understand how their actions directly influenced both
The original sentence contained two mistakes:
1. The word it appears twice in the same clause:
it was fundamental to implement and apply it
The first it serves as a subject replacement, and the second it serves as a pronoun, referring to coaching. However, it cannot serve both functions in the same clause.

What helps us identify this question as a Pronoun question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

Also, replacing the two-word phrase directly influenced with the five-word phrase had a direct influence on creates redundancy.
D. and apply coaching because it helped managers understand how their actions directly influenced both
Incorrect.
Although it corrects the original Pronoun mistake, this answer choice repeats the original stylistic flaw. The words implement and apply are synonyms, so using them both creates redundancy.
It is true that a stylistic flaw is not always corrected on the GMAT, but in this case there is a grammatically correct answer choice which is also stylistically superior to this one. Look for it!
E. coaching because it helped managers understand how their actions directly influenced not only
Incorrect.
Although it corrects both original mistakes, this answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The phrase not only the company and their subordinates is idiomatically incorrect. Not only should be followed by but also; the original version, both the company and their subordinates, is idiomatically correct.

When we say : it was fundamental to implement it...
The 1st IT is a placeholder for the infinitive ( i.e. it = to implement).
The 2nd IT is a normal pronoun (but where is the antecedent noun?)
We need a noun for the 2nd IT.
We can eliminate choice A and C.
Also, implement = apply ,
thus "implement and apply" has redundancy issue.
We can eliminate choice A and D.
Now, left with choices B and E.
Both have noun coaching for 2nd IT
Choice E looks for "not Only, but Also" structure, but there is no "but" in non-underlined part.
