When the results of the final examinations were announced, Susan was surprised to note that she had performed well in both History and Political Science, subjects where she had always struggled, and poor in English, her area of expertise.

(A) both History and Political Science, subjects where she had always struggled, and poor in English,

(B) History and Political Science, subjects in which she had always struggled, and poorly in English,

(C) both History as well as Political Science, subjects in which she had always struggled, and poor in English,

(D) History and Political Science, both being subjects where she had always struggled, and poorly in English,

(E) subjects where she had always struggled, History and Political Science, and poorly in English,

My take,

When the results of the final examinations were announced, Susan was surprised to note that she had performed well in both History and Political Science, subjects where she had always struggled, and poor in English, her area of expertise.

(A) both History and Political Science, subjects where she had always struggled, and poor in English, - Correct choice - parallelism maintained.
(B) History and Political Science, subjects in which she had always struggled, and poorly in English, - parallelism error
(C) both History as well as Political Science, subjects in which she had always struggled, and poor in English, - should be both X & Y
(D) History and Political Science, both being subjects where she had always struggled, and poorly in English, - both being subject - meaningless
(E) subjects where she had always struggled, History and Political Science, and poorly in English,[/quote] - parallelism error

Correct Answer must be (B) , errors in other options, highlighted in RED.

Split #1: "poor" in the original sentence refers to "performed". Hence, we need an adverb, which would be "poorly. Therefore, we can preclude answer A) and C).

Split #2: "where" refers to places. History and Political science are majors, not places. Consequently, all answers including "where" are inccorect. Those are A), D) and E).

This leaves us with answer B) as the correct choice.

Hope that helps :-)
