When to start networking

Question

I am starting in an MSF program this August (classes start August 9th) and I won't have access to the school's alumni network until then. I am wondering, since FT recruiting is typically from September to December if I should be worried that I won't be able to start effectively networking until August? I'm just curious when you typically start the networking process to prepare for FT recruiting?

Start when recruiting gets going...give yourself a while to get adjusted and to do upfront research. Don't burn yourself out, you will do far more networking than you realize.

If you come from a generally under-represented field (minority, LGBT or women), there are tons of opportunities to start networking the summer before your 1st year as an MBA student. Some of these are made possible by organizations (such as the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, Toigo foundation, MBA Jumpstart, etc.). Others are held by banks themselves (Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and UBS all hold pre-MBA camps ranging from 1-3 days where you can meet bankers and receive an insight into the industry). I'm not sure but i believe some consulting firms may also do something similar.
