Yeah, this represents a tough strategic decision. I would prefer to have a single high score on my record and do usually test very well with low/moderate stress. I have not taken any CAT's yet and hope to work through at least some of the Manhattan material before I do more than one CAT. I am a bit rusty and this test is a bit more complicated than others. I guess I will know a bit better after some additional prep and a CAT. So far I have worked through Project GMAT and highly recommend it. Some brush up on idioms seems wise, also.

Anyone here recommend a particularly good refresher for 700+ end geometry related questions? or idioms?

Don't do what I did.

I didn't plan on applying to programs until the very last minute and took the GMAT on November 16 last year ... I missed several key deadlines to schools that I now wish I applied to (Yale, Berkeley, Duke) :\

Sorry to divert a bit, but I kinda have the opposite question here.

Is it ever too early to take a GMAT for PhD applications?

I'm saying this because I took the GMAT in September 2009 for the purposes of applying to master's programs. I did pretty well on that GMAT, and lately I've been gaining interest in PhD programs. I will graduate from my master's program in June 2012, so technically I can start applying this fall. However, if I decide I want to work a couple years first, I could stall until fall 2013 to apply, which will still meet the 5 year life of my GMAT score.

Which brings me to this. Do PhD programs want fresh scores (<2 years old) or do they not care if they are as long as 4, 5 years old as long as the score hasn't expired?

Depends on your schools deadline. My deadlines are all in Jan. So I plan to take GMAT on Nov. 22. I think I'll even be able to apply for Wharton on Dec 15th deadline. The GMAT score can be the last document reaching them ;)
