Can you please explain me this difference b/w understanding, the gerund and grasping, the present participle?

gerund and present participle are both words which end in -ing. The difference is that the gerund plays the role of a noun whereas the present participle plays the role of a verb. Let's take some examples:

 gerund : Eating in a hurry is not good --> "eating in a hurry" plays the role of a noun. It is also the subject of the sentence and could be replaced by any noun "X"
 present participle : It is not good when you are eating in a hurry --> "are eating" is part of the verb of dependent clause "when you are eating in a hurry" where the subject is "you"
