Thanks for your question. On first glance, the easiest way to tackle this question is to get rid of the modifier that sits between the subject and verb. That way, we can easily find which answers have the right verb.
Here is the original sentence with the modifier crossed out:
Whereas empiricism, established by thinkers such as John Locke, prioritizing matter over the abstract, romanticism ranks the imagination higher than the material world.
It's clear if you read what's left over that "prioritizing" isn't the right verb to use here - it should be "prioritizes." This means we can rule out answer A because it doesn't follow subject-verb agreement.
Now that we've narrowed things down a bit, let's look at parallelism. The sentence is comparing two concepts: empiricism and romanticism. To find the correct answer, we need to find the one that uses parallel structure. Let's look at answer B, C, D, and E with the verbs in bold to see which ones match up:
B) Locke, prioritizes matter over the abstract, romanticism ranking(WRONG = not parallel) C) Locke who prioritizes matter over the abstract, romanticism ranked(WRONG = not parallel) D) Locke, prioritizes matter over the abstract, romanticism ranks(CORRECT = parallel structure) E) Locke, prioritizes matter over the abstract, romanticism, which ranks(WRONG = not parallel)
So, based on both subject-verb agreement and parallel structure, D is the correct answer!
