Congratulations buddy. Your story is truly inspirational. I took the GMAT twice and scored miserably in the 500s :( And I have to say that since you had a project abroad and you still scored so well is truly commendable.

I got an opportunity to work on a project in Europe, but I had to let it go, and I thought all night about it before I gave the answer the following day

I am preparing for the exam again and taking it sometime soon and unfortunately I don't have enough time as I really hope to start school next fall. But your hardwork and perseverance makes me feel that it is possible to kill this beast. And yes I agree, it is all about how much time and effort one puts into the preperation.

Good luck with everything :-D

Congratulations necromonger ! This is a fantastic performance ... I hope you still hang around in the forums.

All the best for your apps !

Awesome score! Why did you dislike Kaplan so much? If it's so much harder, wouldn't it prepare you more for the real thing? Right now I take Kaplan classes and use their prep material. Sounds like I should try GMATPrep too. Are Kaplans questions too far from real thing? Please advise, thx.

sentra,

My crib was not so much about Kaplan material as it was about their tests. You will see differing opinions about how effective a 'much harder' test is, in preparing you for the real GMAT. The problem is, their tests (and whatever scoring they do on the results) are hard - especially verbal, and the results are so far off from the real thing that it can confuse your preparation. For e.g. if you got 41 is verbal in GMATPrep but 23 in Kaplan, would you consider yourself good or bad in verbal? where would you put your efforts to improve?

The books themselves are good practice (I don't know about their formal classes, I only used the usual books available in stores), but the tests did not help my planning at all.

Don't let my single opinion discourage you, get a broader opinion, read elsewhere in this site. If their course is going to help you strengthen your fundamentals, by all means go for it. But your best bet for your real readiness for GMAT will come from your scores in GMATPrep.

Necro, thanks to your advice I did a GMATPrep test today I scored 30 points higher then any of my kaplan test. My tempo for Kaplan is so much faster, because there is less opportunity to catch up easier questions I guess, but in GMATPrep I finished math 10 min. earlier and verbal almost 20, which is not good, since there were some problems that I would've have liked to spend more time on, but I had to guess since in Kaplan that's what I had to do to finish on time. I will now work with GMATPrep some more to get my tempo down to match the real thing. Thanks!

update: Got my official score report today - percentiles haven't changed..thankfully :)

Got a 6.0 in AWA..which was a bit of a relief because the only prep I did for AWA was reading some tips the day before. But it doesn't seem like AWA matters much...in the INSEAD app they don't even ask for it. Anyway, that's the end of my gmat saga, now it's time to write the app!

An update:

-Called to Interview by INSEAD. So one more step crossed. INSEAD is the only school I've applied to..

Hi folks,

Took (or Gave?) my GMAT (first attempt) today and was immensely relieved after I saw my final score. In particular - I feel good about the balanced Q and V, one less thing to worry about.

I have many great people here in this forum to thank, and my detailed experience to share with you - including some tips I found very useful.

I'm feeling great- I'll post my debrief in a few hours. What can I say, no more stinkin' GMAT for me!

More soon,
(ps - edited 43V to 41 - typo)

As your avatar suggests, give em hell at the interview necromonger! Incidentally, why are you applying for an international MBA?

gmatt,

Not sure what you mean by "why international MBA"? Well, I'm not native of the US and I have no plans of doing a 2 year MBA. The best 1 year programs are either INSEAD or IMD and that's where my interests lie.

Honghu - good to see you back. Much water has flowed since you were gone. Thanks.
