Which GMAT score mix to use?

Question

Hi all,

I’ve got two 720 scores:
- 48Q 41V
- 45Q 44V

I tend to get unlucky in the exam and not score my highest on both Q and V. Unfortunately I’m not in a financial position to take the exam again (since I have to take an expensive flight each time).

I’m targeting top 15 schools globally. So... which score is best to use? If I pick one and ignore the other, would they look at my other score split as a consideration? Or could I raise it in the optional essay?

720 is an excellent score.

I'd go with the Q48 V41 if I were you.

Hi Nissa,

When you took these two Official GMATs, did you select 5 Schools to receive your Score (or did you not choose any Schools at that time)? I ask because if you selected a particular School to receive your Score Report for both attempts (and you did not 'cancel' either of them), then that School will receive both Score Reports (meaning that you will have no say in the matter). In that same way, any School that you selected to receive one of the Reports will receive that Report.

In your post in the Admissions Experts Forum, you named some highly-competitive Programs. Many Business Schools view an Applicant's Quant Scaled Score as an indicator of how that Applicant might handle the 'academic side' of the Program - so your first Score (with the Q48) would almost certainly be the better Score to send.

Hi Rich

I cancelled both scores, so I have the choice to reinstate one or both scores.

If I kept both, would the schools look at both since they are the same total score, or likely select one at random?

Hi Nissa,

Admissions Committees at Business Schools tend to be fairly serious about the candidate review process, so if you submit both of your Official Scores, then you should expect that both Scores will be factored into your overall application.

In my opinion, I think both scores are lovely. I don't think you should bother about writing the exam again. However, I think you should go with the first score. Cheers.
