Bunuel
Which is more expensive, a peach or a plum?
(1) A dozen plums cost $1.79.
(2) Peaches are 69¢ a pound.
Target question: Which is more expensive, a peach or a plum? When I SCAN the two statements, they both feel insufficient, AND I’m pretty sure I can identify some cases with conflicting answers to the
target question. So, I’m going to head straight to……
Statements 1 and 2 combined Statement 1 tells us that A dozen plums cost $1.79, which means EACH plum costs approximately 15¢
Statement 2 tells us that peaches are 69¢ a pound. The problem is that
we don't know how many peaches are in 1 pound of peaches. Consider these two conflicting cases:
Case a: There are 3 peaches in a pound of peaches, in which case each peach costs 23¢ So, the answer to the target question is
peaches cost moreCase b: There are 10 peaches in a pound of peaches, in which case each peach costs 6.9¢. So, the answer to the target question is
plums cost moreSince we can’t answer the
target question with certainty, the combined statements are NOT SUFFICIENT
Answer: E
