Of all the explanations I read, I feel the below one is the best one.

Since we need to find out what's closest to 1/2, just subtract that from each of the options.

(A) 4/7 - 1/2 = 1/7
(B) 5/9 - 1/2 = 1/18
(C) 6/11 - 1/2 = 1/22
(D) 7/13 - 1/2 = 1/26
(E) 9/16 - 1/2 = 2/32 => 1/16

From the above since 1/26 is the lowest number, (D) is the correct answer.

I like this answer, to be honest. It is plain and easily understandable. I tried to divide and then get the closer answer, which took nearly 2.49 minutes.

To determine which answer choice is closest to 1/2, we can subtract 1/2 from each answer choice. The difference that is closest to zero will indicate the fraction that is closest to 1/2.

A) 4/7

4/7 - 1/2 = 8/14 - 7/14 = 1/14

B) 5/9

5/9 - 1/2 = 10/18 - 9/18 = 1/18

C) 6/11

6/11 - 1/2 = 12/22 - 11/22 = 1/22

D) 7/13

7/13 - 1/2 = 14/26 - 13/26 = 1/26

E) 9/16

9/16 - 1/2 = 9/16 - 8/16 = 1/16

Since 1/26 is closest to zero, 7/13 is closest to 1/2.

Answer: D

I divided them upto 2 decimals and got the values as:

A. 4/7 - .57

B. 5/9 - .55

C. 6/11- .54

D. 7/13 - .53

E. 9/16 - .56

The closest to 1/2 (.5) is D.

I don't think you need to do any subtractions. The number closest to 1/2 will have a ratio closest to 1:1 with 1/2.

For example, the ratio of 4/7:1/2 is 8:7
and the ratio of 5/9:1/2 is 10:9.

Notice that 10:9 is closer to 1:1. The ratios are as follows:

4/7:1/2 = 8:7
5/9:1/2 = 10:9
6/11:1/2 = 12:11
7/13:1/2 = 14/:13
9/16:1/2 = 9:8

7/13 is thus the winner.

I believe long division is the shortest possible way here. 4/7 = 0.57.., 5/9 = 0.5555, 6/11 = 0.55, 7/13 = 0.53.., 9/16 = 0.56... Correct answer 0.53.. D.

A more intuitive solution would be a simple comparison.

3.5/7 is half. 4/7 is 0.5 extra in numerator.
4.5/9 is half. 5/9 is 0.5 extra in numerator. Since the numerator here is greater than previous, 0.5 is a smaller percentage extra. So 5/9 is closer to half than 4/7.
The same logic will be applicable for 6/11 and 7/13 too which makes 7/13 the smallest among them (but still greater than 1/2)

8/16 is half and 9/16 is 1 extra in numerator. So the extra is a greater percentage now than in the case of 7/13.
Hence 9/16 is greater than 7/13.
