Which of the following fractions is greatest?
(A) 15/16
(B) 7/9
(C) 13/15
(D) 8/9
(E) 10/11
Certainly an easy question, but I notice that the correct timer responses are averaging more than a minute, so might as well spend a minute talking about glancing at fractions and understanding what they mean. If you're finding common denominators, you're wasting time on what could be a 6-second question.
A) What does 15/16 mean? It's not just two numbers stacked on top of each other. It means that if we take a cake, cut it into 16 pieces, and remove one piece, we are left with 15 pieces that add up to 15/16th of the cake.
B) If we cut the same cake into 9 pieces, we cut this second one into FEWER pieces, so each piece must be LARGER than those of the first cake. AND we are removing two pieces. We definitely have less cake left than in A.
C) If we cut the same cake into 15 pieces, blah blah blah, same as B.
D) We are removing one piece, like we did in A. Is that piece bigger or smaller than in A. It's bigger, so we are left with less cake.
E) Same as D.
Answer choice A.
