Interesting one. I agree with Folaa.

a. the book is not the same as that of Bill's (Wrong)
b. the book is not the same as that of Bill (Right)

If option 'a' had read: 'the book is not the same as bill's', then correct.
'that of bill' also means 'bill's book' and so, option 'b' is hell correct!

Option 'a' actually seems to compare 'the book' with 'bill's book's <something>', maybe 'bill's book's front page', which is a faulty comparison.

which of the following is correct

a. the book is not the same as that of Bill's.

b. the book is not the same as that of Bill.

please explain. thanks.

The first one.

You can verify easily by inserting the 'book' after Bill/Bill's.

a. the book is not the same as that of Bill's book

b. the book is not the same as that of Bill. book

A it is.

Wouldn't that be correct only if the sentence says something like "the book's cover is not the same as that of Bill's". In that case, I agree that A would be correct.

But the way the sentence is given "the book is not the same as that of Bill's" would be redundant. I vote for B.

Only (B) can be correct.

In (A): "that" and "'s" both descibe book, which is not correct.
In (B): that correctly refers to book.

B is correct...That of Bill is the same as Bill's book.
A is wrong because there is a redundant comparison. That of bill's book means Bill's book's book. If it were comparing feaures of a book such as binder, then A would have been right.
a. the book cover is not the same as that of Bill's.
b. the book cover is not the same as that of Bill .

absoulately agree with B.
a. the book cover is not the same as that of Bill's. it is wrong because it is redundant. that of bill and bill's are same.
b. the book cover is not the same as that of Bill. it eliminates the redundancy.

B is right

A) that refers to book; also Bill's refers to book

It's redundant.

This book is not the same as Bill's (book).

The cover of this book is not the same as that (meaning "the cover") of Bill's (book).

a. the book is not the same as that of Bill's.

b. the book is not the same as that of Bill.

The job of pronoun 'that' here is to replace the subject "the book".
Easiest way to check if this correct is to replace that with the subject and see if it makes sense.

a would read:
a. the book is not the same as the book of Bill's.

There is a problem here - of is already doing the job of possessive, so we don't need another possesive Bill's.

b would read:
b. the book is not the same as the book of Bill.

This at least makes sense but not very graceful indeed because of the usage 'the book of bill'. But b is preferred over a.

The graceful alternative for a and b would be

"the book is not the same as Bill's"

Please read up on the following thread that explains the use of that, those and the possessive when using comparison.

I also believe it's B

a. the book is not the same as 'the book' of Bill's
b. the book is not the same as 'the book' of Bill

if A said 'as Bill's book', without mentioning 'of', it would be correct. B seems correct to me
