Which of the following ratios is most nearly equal to the ratio 1 + square root of 5 to 2?

A. 8 to 5
B. 6 to 5
C. 5 to 4
D. 2 to 1
E. 1 to 1

Answer choices represent the ratios, for example 6 to 5 means 6/5.

$$\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}\approx{\frac{1+2.2}{2}}=\frac{3.2}{2}=1.6=\frac{8}{5}$$

$$\frac{1+sqrt{5}}{2}=\frac{10(1+2.24)}{20}=\frac{32.4}{20}$$

A. $$\frac{8}{5}=\frac{32}{20}$$

B. $$\frac{6}{5}=\frac{24}{20}$$

C. $$\frac{5}{4}=\frac{25}{20}$$

D. $$\frac{2}{1}=\frac{40}{20}$$

E. $$\frac{1}{1}=\frac{20}{20}$$

Compare the numerators. A's numerator is the closest.

Ans: "A"

You know that sqrt(5) is larger than 2. Thus the expression is larger than 3/2, which only leaves A and D as possible solutions. Since sqrt(5) is closer to 2 than 3 D also drops out, leaving A as the correct solution.
