AP1406
I just completed the GMAT with a 710 (47Q, 41V, 8IR, waiting for the writing score). I have a low undergraduate GPA of 2.8 with a BS in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have 4.5 years of work experience, all in sales. I have been at my current job for 3.5 years, and last year was promoted to sales manager where I am gaining management experience.
Having completed my GMAT, I am starting to look into the applications process and choosing the schools to apply to. With the profile I have outlined, what programs do I have a realistic chance of getting accepted into?
I am looking at schools like University of Wisconsin - Madison, University of Minnesota, and University of Iowa. Am I setting my sights too high or too low? Geographically, I am open to any schools in the United States. I would love to hear experiences of applicants with similar profiles, mainly overcoming a low GPA.
Additionally, given the time of year, for some programs I could apply to the third round of applications for the fall 2017, however I am inclined to wait to apply to the Fall 2018 class and apply in the first and second rounds. Is that a wise strategy, or should I be applying to programs during round 3 this year?
Lastly, is there anything I should be doing over the next year to improve my profile?
Thank you in advance for your input!
Hey dude,
Good to hear from you! And good questions!
1. NO Round 3!!! Do not apply Round 3. It's too hard and you have some strong built-in weaknesses.
2. I need more detail about your work experience to understand really where you can fit, but I would start looking at schools in approximately the 15-30 range. You have a great GMAT but weak WE and GPA... (from what I can see).
3. For next year: More leadership. More volunteer work. Better impact at work.
One more thing for next year: once you have figure out the schools a bit, I would aim to visit the schools that you target in spring semester. It can help.
Feel free to drop us a line with more detail!
Best,
Jon Frank
