I as not able to do much in random free moments of time but that may be my personal weakness. The only "prep" I was able to have was reading fiction books and the only thing that kept me engaged on the subway was the plot. I have no idea how I would pay attention or remember anything if it was a GMAT book, but again, that's me.

I personally think it's a matter of practice. At first, I couldn't concentrate on the material on public transport or in crowded cafeterias or restaurants. But after a few months it wasn't a problem any more. I could revise the material and even to read new stuff (I was preparing for final exams).
