While presents contrast.
Contrast is Gordon's songs are under his name but initially he was a part of a band.

We need the underlined part to be a clause and hence we need a subject "he" here."he" refers back to Gordon.

Can anyone explain why C is incorrect? I think the two clause are independent and we require ", + FANBOY".

Actually, this is the meaning of the sentence.
