While pesticides kill insects, mice, unwanted plants, fungi and microorganisms (viruses and bacteria) that damage crops, increasing overall plant yield, it is well known that they are replete with problems. Pesticides deposited on fruits, vegetables, and grain get transferred to the stomach when the corresponding food is consumed and can cause variety of diseases, including – in a few cases – cancer. Hence, despite their numerous benefits, pesticides should not be used on fruits and vegetables consumed by humans
In evaluating author's position, it would be most useful to determine which of the following?
A) Whether cleansing fruits and vegetables before shipping them to retailers removes the pesticides and negates their corresponding ill effects. B) Whether the cancer caused by pesticides is treatable using popular cancer medicine. C) Whether some people would die because of food shortages in the even pesticides are banned D) Whether the impact of pesticides is as severe on fruits as they are on vegetables E) Whether the recent research on ill effects of pesticides was sponsored by industry groups that would benefit commercially from a ban on pesticides
