I have been out of school for about 3 years now (I'm 25) and was thinking about going back to business school. Of course to do that, you have to go through the GMAT. I took the GMAT last week and got a 490. Feel as if I could do better. Just one thing... Why is this test so dang BORING????! Studying for this was a drag and is just no fun. I understand not everything in life can be exciting, but this is some of the dryest material I have ever seen. On the test I was just clicking answers as I was starting to get a headache reading the long passages and the passages are so dull it sometimes takes me 3-4 times to get a hint of what the aritcle is saying. I am reading materials and saying, how the heck does this measure any of my ability? Only this this test is doing is testing my patience. I just remember I took the SATs back in high school and got a 930. Yes a 930. I went to CC and transferred to the University of South Carolina, where I double majored in finance and HR and graduated with a 3.7. So to me these stardarized tests are a complete joke and it sucks that I have to waste $250 of my hard earned money.
Wish this test didn't exist, if a university wants to test how well I would do at their institution, I think that your undergrad degree should speak for itself. If they questions that, interview the dang person to know how reasonable they are...

If you're serious about mastering the GMAT, I'd recommend that you try looking at the material from a different perspective. True, most people don't find GMAT RC passages thrilling, but it really helps to find the interesting angle in whatever you're reading. I'm not just trying to make you feel good about the GMAT. This kind of attitude shift will help your score. If you don't care about what you're reading, you'll experience just what you're describing: you get done and just have to read it again. When you read with engagement, trying to get at the story ("What is the author's point? Oh, there's a new theory. How does it work? What about the old theories?"), you understand and retain much more of what you read and you have a better time doing it. I'm never bored during the GMAT. That doesn't mean that I want to go home and read about all those topics in my free time. It just means I'm able to care about them for the few minutes it takes to get the questions right, just like during a so-so movie I might care about the characters while I'm watching but forget about them once I go home.

A few folks will share this opinion with you. However, to succeed and knock this test of high school math and English grammar/reasoning out, you will have to care. You can hate it - that's OK but to really make a difference, you must take great interest in destroying it.
I won't get into the questions of Why and how as they are somewhat rhetorical. It is irrelevant what we think. The key piece is what's required and by how many schools and what importance it has. The test has some value but it is not the key element among the top 20 schools. They do put value on your essays, LOR's, Resume, and undergrad GPA, so if those are good, your GMAT can be lower than average, but not much lower as that will be a red flag. If you look at the schoools, they all like to be around the 700-range (slightly more and slightly less). That's one easy way to quantify the quality of applicants from the test/academic standpoint since GPA varies (you may have gone to an easy community college and gotten a 4.0 or hard engineering school and gotten 2.5)
I agree with Dmitry (he beat me to the punch line). You need to make GMAT interesting somehow. I did it by working on CR's and taking interest in figuring out traps and playing a game of win/lose on each question. The only way to get a high (700+) score is to really get into it. If you hate it and repulsed by it - there is no way for you to engage and you will be easy pickings.
