On GmatPREP, I got about 13 wrong and about 5 or so were STUPID careless errors - some on very easy problems - it scored me a 46

Go figure...

Joemama, NTLancer, kook,
Thanks for your reply!

It seems that the best strategy is to give each Q your best shot and guess if can't solve it in <3 minutes. Also my thinking is that if you can't solve it in 2-3minutes, chances are that you wont be able to solve it in the next 3-4 minutes either!

I just took another gmatprep today and scored a 47 in math. 12 incorrect. It was probably the most difficult math section i ever had. Although it had 4 -5overlapp ones- that i forgot how to do. I was Realy doing bad in time. First 10 was done in 30 mins, second 10 was done in 18 mins, third 10 were done in 17 mins, didnt get to the last 2. However, the majority of the q's recieved were probably from the difficult bin. I thought I had bomed this section but ended up doing ok. So i guess it really depends on the difficulty, how many you get right/wrong in a row, and to an extent how many you answer correctly. I do beleive that if you are already in the 700 level by q 30, getting the rest wrong probably wont hurt your score much.

i think getting all answers right nets you a 51.
but i have seen 51 for having 1 error as well.

the wrench in this mess is the fact that not all questions count. there are a few questions peppered in for 'research' and don't affect your score (and i believe gmatprep simulates this). now wouldn't it be sad if you spent 5 mins on such a question?

Yeah GMAT Prep Maths is relatively difficult! From what I hear the new GMAT std is equally difficult.

I scored Q49 a couple of weeks back and I had erred in only 4 questions. I took a test yesterday and made 14 mistakes !! I thought I would score very badly, but to my utter surprise, I still got Q49 !!! Got qs. 6,7,11,15,16,17,18,20,21,28,29,30,31 incorrect. I dont know what to say !

With how many mistakes can you get 45,46,47,48,49,50 in Q?

Doesn't really work this way. At the very least it's probably not a good way to think about approaching the exam!

Hey, I don't agree with your point. Just look for BB's post. By experiments it was concluded that answering first 10 questions right is crucial to getting good score. I would say statistics matter, and you should know what are your odds.
