Just shouting out with some excitement. I'm getting ready to retake the GMAT on June 4th (pondering pushing it back 2 weeks). I just got done taking an 800Score.com Math section and got 24 of 28 right for a 710! I spent 4 hours last night reading over comb/perm, and overlapping sets. The questions I got wrong were mostly due to misreading what the actual question wanted.
One question said dividing a number by 3/8 then multiplying by 5/6 is the same as dividing by what? I answered 20/9, but that is the answer to "the same as multiplying by what number". The inverse (9/20) is the correct answer.
Another quesiton was that a train can go 15 miles per ton of coal empty, and 80% of that fully loaded. How many tons of coal will the train use to travel 160 miles fully loaded. I divded 160 by 15 rather than by 12. Just a stupid mistake.
The 3rd one I got wrong was just not following through on the question correctly. I got it set up right, but executed poorly. -->
The average of x, y, and z is one-third greater than x. The sum of x + y is what percentage greater than x?
I did x/3 + y/3 + z/3 = 4x/3 {hard to draw fractions here}.
That's the same as x + y + z = 4x
Bring the x's on the same side and get Y + Z = 3x. There is the answer, plain and simple 3 times, or 300% the value of X. BE SURE NOT TO OVERCOMPLICATE A SIMPLE PROBLEM!!!
The second question on the test was a grouping question involving a number of employees in a company. I used a tic-tac-toe grid and got it right.
I'm absolutely stoked about retaking the GMAT now. This is a 97% correct. The first time I took the GMAT in late April, I got a 66% on quant, and 84% on verbal for a 650 (82%) overall. Armed with the stuff from this forum and some good solid prep, I think 700+ is totally within reach!!!!
Wow, I took the GMAT the first time with little prep just trying to get into the local state university's mba program. It's a good regional school, but not really recognized outside the midwest. When i got the 650 on the first attempt, I looked around and found this forum that has been awesome.
As you can tell, I'm very happy with this.
